Vallnord: La Massana & Ordino Valleys

Wild nature and ancient iron ⛰️🚴

The valleys of La Massana and Ordino are often considered the most picturesque in Andorra, offering a greener, wilder experience that appeals to active families. La Massana serves as the action hub, with a gondola located right in the town center that lifts you up to the Pal Arinsal station. In summer, this becomes a mountain bike mecca, but it also offers very accessible family walking trails and a rope park for children.

Ordino, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is slightly quieter and incredibly well-preserved. A must-do activity here is the Ruta del Ferro (Iron Route). This flat, easy walking trail near the village of Llorts is dotted with outdoor iron sculptures and explains the region's mining history. It is perfect for young legs and strollers. You can even visit the ancient Llorts Mine, where helmet-clad tours take you inside the earth—an exciting mini-adventure for kids.

For spectacular views with minimal effort, families can drive up to the Ordino Arcalís station and take the chairlift to the Tristaina Solar Viewpoint. This giant sundial hangs over the mountain peaks and offers views of the glacial lakes below. While the very top might be daunting for toddlers, the lakes area itself is a wonderful spot for a picnic. In winter, Ordino Arcalís is known for having the best snow quality in Andorra, and its north-facing slopes keep conditions good for longer into the spring.

Cultural stops are plentiful here too. The Postal Museum in Ordino and the La Farga Rossell forge offer interactive history lessons. Accommodation in this region varies from the lively après-ski vibe of Arinsal—where hotels are often very family-oriented—to the quiet charm of Ordino's stone-built guesthouses. If your family loves nature walks, history, and a slightly slower pace than the bustle of the capital, this is the ideal region.
