Fujairah & East Coast
Where mountains meet the ocean for seaside adventure π’β°οΈπ
Separated from the rest of the UAE by the jagged Hajar Mountains, the East Coast offers a complete change of pace and scenery. This region, primarily the Emirate of Fujairah and the exclaves of Sharjah (Khor Fakkan and Kalba), faces the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean. The vibe here is laid-back and focused on nature, making it an ideal "staycation" style destination for families looking to escape the skyscrapers.
The coastline is the main draw. Unlike the calm, shallow waters of the Arabian Gulf, the ocean here is deeper and cooler, teeming with marine life. Snoopy Island (named for its resemblance to the cartoon dog sleeping on his back) is accessible from the beach at Al Aqah. It offers some of the best snorkeling in the country, where children can easily spot sea turtles, colorful reef fish, and occasionally reef sharks in shallow water.
History comes alive at the Fujairah Fort, one of the oldest in the UAE, and the nearby Heritage Village. These sites are small enough to explore without tiring out little legs and provide a glimpse into life before the oil boom. A drive north to Dibba reveals dramatic coastal roads where the mountains plunge directly into the sea, offering views reminiscent of Omanβs Musandam peninsula.
For a unique family outing, visit the Khor Fakkan Amphitheatre and the impressive man-made waterfall carved into the rock face. The Khor Fakkan Corniche is beautifully landscaped with play areas and grassy spots for picnics. Further south in Kalba, the Kalba Mangrove Centre is a fantastic eco-tourism spot. Here, families can kayak through ancient mangrove forests and observe rare birds like the Kingfisher in a protected environment.
Accommodations in this region are largely resort-based. Many hotels offer all-inclusive packages that are great value for families. The pace is slower, the traffic is minimal, and the air is often clearer. It is the perfect spot for families who want to swap shopping malls for seashells and mountains.

Activities & Best Times
Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism
Dramatic Hajar Mountain terrain and hidden wadis provide a rugged, authentic landscape for hiking and exploration. Winter months are peak for safe outdoor activity with mild temperatures; summer conditions are dangerously hot for mountain trekking.
Beach resorts, marine activities: diving, snorkelling, kite surfing, wind surfing, sailing
Offers the UAE's best diving and snorkeling with vibrant coral reefs and marine life like turtles and rays in the Gulf of Oman. Peak months provide optimal water clarity and air temps (25-33Β°C), while extreme summer heat and humidity make beach activities uncomfortable Jun-Sep.
Urban tourism, museums, historical sites, architecture
Home to the 15th-century Al Bidyah Mosque and Fujairah Fort, offering genuine historical depth compared to the modern west coast. Best explored in winter to allow for walking between historical sites; extreme heat limits cultural tourism in the summer.
Spa retreats, wellness centers, peaceful getaways
High-end coastal retreats offer world-class spa facilities and a tranquil, slower pace than Dubai. Peak months are ideal for outdoor yoga and beachside relaxation; summer humidity significantly degrades the comfort of outdoor wellness spaces.
Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel
The scenic drive through the Hajar Mountains and along the jagged coastline is among the most spectacular in the region. Winter months provide the best visibility and comfortable temperatures for stopping at viewpoints and local markets.
Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation
A regional hub for water-based sports and mountain biking with established infrastructure. Spring and autumn are peak for balancing air and water temperatures; summer heat is too intense for any sustained physical activity outdoors.
Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education
Archaeological sites and marine conservation efforts offer some educational value for families, though not on a global-leading scale. Visits are best timed for the cooler months when outdoor heritage sites are accessible and active.
Events, celebrations, seasonal attractions
Unique local traditions like bull-butting (a non-lethal folk sport) provide authentic cultural immersion. These events are seasonally dependent on cooler weather, making winter the only viable time for international visitors to attend.
