Styria & Southern Alpine Greens
Chocolate factories, castles, and green rolling hills 🍫🏰
Styria (Steiermark) is heavily forested and agriculturally rich, offering a grounding, sensory experience for families. A top destination is the Zotter Chocolate Factory in Riegersburg. Unlike standard factory tours, this is a 'tasting expedition' where visitors are handed a ceramic spoon and can sample everything from raw cocoa beans to flowing chocolate fountains. It's an interactive (and sugary) hit for all ages.
Perched high on a volcanic rock nearby is the imposing Riegersburg Castle. Families can reach the top via a glass elevator or a steep walk. The castle grounds include a bird of prey centre with daily flight demonstrations. For a different kind of animal encounter, the Piber Stud Farm is the nursery for the famous Lipizzaner horses of the Spanish Riding School. Here, children can see the foals (which are born black or brown) before they turn white and move to Vienna.
The regional capital, Graz, is a UNESCO City of Design that remains very accessible for children. The Schlossberg hill in the city center offers great views, but the descent is the real attraction: families can take the 'Schlossberg Slide,' the world's tallest indoor underground slide, which spirals 64 meters down through the rock. The city also features the FRida & freD Children's Museum, designed specifically with hands-on exhibits for young minds.
To the north, the landscape becomes Alpine. The Dachstein glacier offers snow experiences even in summer. To the southeast, the 'Thermenland' (Spa Region) features resorts like H2O Hotel-Therme or Rogner Bad Blumau, which are designed with extensive water parks and uneven, colorful architecture by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, appealing to a child's sense of whimsy.

Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel
