Nakhchivan (exclave)

Legends, fortresses, and salt caves ๐Ÿฐโœจ

โš ๏ธ SAFETY WARNING: Due to political volatility and the proximity of the border with Armenia, government agencies (including CA, USA, UK, AU, IE, NZ) advise travelers to reconsider travel to this region. Areas within 5km of the Armenian border are strictly restricted due to landmines and potential conflict. The security situation can change rapidly. Families are strongly urged to consult their own government's official travel advisory before considering a trip, as circumstances and risk assessments vary.

Nakhchivan is an autonomous exclave separated from the rest of Azerbaijan, accessible primarily by air from Baku. It offers a distinct travel experience characterized by pristine landscapes, impeccably clean streets, and a deep sense of history. One of the standout adventures for active families is the climb to Alinja Castle. Often dubbed the "Machu Picchu of the Caucasus," this fortress sits atop a craggy mountain peak. Reaching the top involves climbing over 1,500 stairs, which is a rigorous workout but rewards climbers with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Zangezur mountains.

For a more relaxing experience, the Duzdag Salt Mountain is a must-visit. It houses a physiotherapy center inside a former salt mine, where the air is rich in minerals and free of allergens. Families can walk through the cool, cavernous tunnels, which provide a unique respite from the summer heat and are believed to help with respiratory health. In the main city, you can visit the Momb of Noah, a site traditionally held to be the final resting place of the biblical figure after the flood.

The town of Ordubad, known for its blooming gardens and lemon trees, produces delicious local fruits and preserves that make for great snacks. While the tourism infrastructure is less developed than in Baku, the roads are excellent and the region feels quiet and undiscovered. Travelers should be aware that due to its geography, land borders with Armenia are closed and militarized, so all entry and exit is typically routed through the airport in Nakhchivan City.
