Sichuan is synonymous with one thing that every child loves: Giant Pandas. The capital, Chengdu, is home to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. It is the best place in the world to see pandas of all ages, from tiny pink newborns in incubators to playful toddlers wrestling in the grass. Getting there early in the morning is crucial to seeing them active during feeding time. Chengdu is also famous for its relaxed lifestyle; families can visit People's Park to drink tea, watch locals practice Tai Chi, and even get a quirky 'ear cleaning' service (best left to the adults!).
A short high-speed train ride away is the Leshan Giant Buddha. Standing 71 meters tall, this stone statue carved into a red sandstone cliff is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can hike down the steep stairs to stand at its massive toes (which are taller than a person) or, for a more relaxing option suitable for small children, take a boat tour to view the entire statue from the river. Nearby Mount Emei offers a chance to see wild monkeys, though caution is needed as they can be aggressive with food.
To the east lies the mega-city of Chongqing, known as the 'Mountain City' for its layered roads and skyscrapers built on steep hills. The monorail here famously goes through a residential building, a sight that fascinates transport-loving kids. Taking a river cruise on the Yangtze at night reveals a skyline that rivals Hong Kong's. While Sichuan food is famous for its numbing 'mala' spice, there are plenty of non-spicy options for kids, such as tomato-and-egg soup, sweet sticky rice cakes, and clear broth wontons. In the evenings, catching a performance of Sichuan Opera is highly entertaining, featuring the rapid-fire 'face-changing' illusion that leaves audiences baffled.
