Central Pacific (Manuel Antonio)
Monkeys, sloths, and safe swimming beaches 🐒🏖️
The Central Pacific is the most popular destination for families visiting Costa Rica, largely due to its blend of convenience and guaranteed wildlife sightings. The crown jewel is Manuel Antonio National Park, a small but biodiversity-rich reserve where the rainforest meets white-sand beaches. The main trails are wide and well-maintained, suitable for strollers and young walkers. Here, it is almost impossible not to see animals; three species of monkeys (white-faced capuchin, howler, and squirrel monkeys), two-toed and three-toed sloths, and vibrant agoutis are common sights. Inside the park, the beaches offer gentle waves protected by a natural bay, creating a safe swimming environment for children.
Just north of Manuel Antonio lies the famous Tarcoles River Bridge. It serves as a perfect rest stop on the drive from San José, where families can safely peer over the railing to see dozens of massive American crocodiles sunbathing on the mudbanks below. Nearby, the Carara National Park is a haven for Scarlet Macaws, which can often be seen flying in pairs overhead.
Accommodation options in the towns of Quepos and Jacó are plentiful, ranging from luxury resorts to vacation rentals. While Jacó is known for its surf and nightlife, nearby Playa Hermosa offers a quieter atmosphere, though the waves there are too rough for swimming. For a calmer beach day outside the national park, families often head to Playa Biesanz, a hidden cove with tranquil waters perfect for kayaking and snorkeling. The region is hot and humid year-round, so early morning activities are best to beat the heat and the crowds.

Activities & Best Times
Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism
Manuel Antonio National Park is one of Costa Rica's smallest national parks (1,983 hectares) and among its most heavily visited. While wildlife accessibility is outstanding, the wilderness experience does not compare to Corcovado, Tortuguero, or Monteverde on a global scale. 'Very_good' reflects its strength as an accessible, family-friendly nature destination without equating it to globally peerless wilderness areas.
Beach resorts, marine activities: diving, snorkelling, kite surfing, wind surfing, sailing
Manuel Antonio's beaches are beautiful but small, frequently crowded, and don't compare to world-class beach destinations (Maldives, Caribbean islands, Thai beaches) in terms of scale, water clarity, or sand quality. The unique wildlife-meets-beach experience is special but the beach infrastructure and conditions themselves are 'very_good' not 'excellent' by international standards.
Spa retreats, wellness centers, peaceful getaways
Home to high-end boutique eco-resorts and jungle-integrated spas catering to sophisticated travelers seeking a blend of luxury and nature. While the dry season is perfect for open-air yoga and relaxation, the extreme humidity and persistent heavy rains during the off-season can impact the tranquility of the experience.
Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation
Features world-class sport fishing from the modern Marina Pez Vela and excellent coastal kayaking and paddleboarding opportunities. Conditions are most consistent during the low-rainfall months; the stormy off-season from May to November brings rougher seas and less reliable weather for maritime sports.
Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education
An exceptional natural classroom for children to learn about tropical biodiversity and conservation through high-quality guided tours. Peak conditions align with the dry season when tours are most comfortable and wildlife visibility is at its highest for younger explorers.
Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel
The scenic drive along the Pacific coast offers spectacular vistas and iconic stops, supported by generally well-maintained tourism infrastructure. Travel is best in the dry season to avoid road washouts or visibility issues caused by the torrential downpours typical of the peak rainy season.
