São Vicente

The cultural heart with a vibrant harbour 🎶

São Vicente is known as the soul of Cape Verde, famous for its music, carnival, and colonial charm. The island is dry and wind-swept, but the capital, Mindelo, is a gem of architecture and culture that feels distinct from the rest of the country. The city is safe and walkable, with wide avenues and squares where children can run freely. The Mercado de Peixe (Fish Market) is a fascinating stop to see the daily catch, while the replica of Lisbon's Belém Tower near the waterfront adds a touch of history.

For families, the standout attraction is Laginha Beach. Located right in the city within walking distance of the center, this beach features startlingly blue, calm water and white sand. It is popular with local families, giving it a friendly, community vibe. Lifeguards are usually present, and the water is shallow and safe for swimming. On the other side of the island lies Baía das Gatas, a large natural lagoon protected from the ocean by a volcanic rock wall. The water here is shallow and warm, essentially a giant saltwater swimming pool perfect for toddlers and snorkeling beginners.

A drive to the top of Monte Verde, the island's highest point, offers panoramic views over the city and across the channel to the neighboring island of Santo Antão. The road is paved and easy to navigate. Along the coast, the fishing village of Calhau offers a quiet escape with views of extinct volcanoes. On weekends, many restaurants here feature live music; since Cape Verdean culture is very family-oriented, children are welcome everywhere, and it's common to see kids dancing or sleeping in chairs while their parents enjoy the famous morna music.

São Vicente is also the transit hub for the ferry to Santo Antão, making it a perfect base for a dual-island holiday. You can spend a few days enjoying the urban culture and beaches of Mindelo before heading to the mountains. The island has a good infrastructure with supermarkets, a hospital, and reliable taxis, ensuring a comfortable stay for travelers with children.
