North Bohemia (Bohemian Switzerland & Paradise)
Fantasy landscapes and hands-on science 🧪🌲
North Bohemia is defined by its dramatic geology and rich industrial heritage, offering families a distinct mix of outdoor exploration and educational fun. The region houses two spectacular natural areas: Bohemian Switzerland National Park and the Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj). In Bohemian Switzerland, the landscape is dominated by sandstone formations. A favorite excursion involves hiking from Hřensko to the gorges of the Kamenice River, where ferrymen propel flat-bottomed boats through deep, moss-covered canyons while telling humorous stories about the rock shapes—a hit with children.
Bohemian Paradise offers a gentler but equally stunning landscape of rock towers and pine forests. This UNESCO Geopark is famous for its "rock cities" like Prachov Rocks (Prachovské skály), where safe, railed viewpoints allow families to gaze out over thousands of stone pinnacles. The region is also dotted with ruined castles that spark the imagination; Trosky Castle, with its two distinctive basalt towers named "Baba" (Old Woman) and "Panna" (Virgin), provides a steep but rewarding climb with panoramic views.
The regional capital, Liberec, serves as the perfect base for families, especially when the weather turns unpredictable. It is home to iQlandia, a massive modern science center with hundreds of interactive exhibits, including a humanoid robot and a planetarium. Next door, the Babylon Centre offers a steampunk-themed aquapark with laser shows and slides. For a view of the whole region, families can take the futuristic cable car up to the Ještěd tower, a spaceship-like hotel and transmitter perched atop the mountain ridge.
Further east, the Crystal Valley area around Jablonec nad Nisou introduces children to the region's glassmaking tradition. Many workshops offer bead-making classes where kids can create their own jewelry. In winter, the Jizera Mountains provide excellent cross-country skiing and family-friendly downhill slopes, making North Bohemia a year-round destination where rugged nature meets interactive learning.

Regionally outstanding but not globally elite for adventure tourism. Only 1 editorial attraction (Žatec Hops - unrelated to adventure). Comparable destinations rated excellent would be Patagonia, Dolomites, NZ.
Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education
The region is the heart of the 'Crystal Valley,' offering authentic, world-class glass-making heritage and geological education in UNESCO-listed landscapes. Peak season aligns with full operational hours for artisanal workshops and museum sites, while winter sees many regional historical sites close.
Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel
Scenic routes connect fairytale castles like Trosky and Kost through dramatic sandstone pillars and valley vistas. May, June, and September offer the best balance of visibility and pleasant driving temperatures, whereas July and August can be wetter and more crowded.
Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation
Home to globally unique sandstone climbing traditions and the spectacular Elbe Cycle Path, catering to high-level active travelers. Peak summer months provide the most stable conditions for climbing and long-distance cycling, while shoulder months remain viable for experienced athletes.
Urban tourism, museums, historical sites, architecture
Liberec and Děčín offer authentic Central European architecture and sophisticated urban hubs amidst the wilderness. The cultural calendar is most active from late spring through early autumn, providing access to historic castle interiors and local heritage festivals.
Spa retreats, wellness centers, peaceful getaways
Boutique eco-lodges and spa facilities in Liberec leverage the peaceful natural surroundings for high-end wellness retreats. While some facilities operate year-round, the experience is best in summer when outdoor relaxation and forest therapy can be fully integrated into the stay.
Winter sports, ski resorts, snow activities
The Jizera Mountains offer reliable cross-country and downhill skiing infrastructure (Ještěd) suitable for families seeking an alternative to the crowded Alps. Peak snow conditions occur in January and February; however, the lower elevation makes the season shorter and less predictable than high-alpine destinations.
