Greater Copenhagen (Storkøbenhavn)

Tivoli magic and city canals 🧜‍♀️

Greater Copenhagen is one of the most family-friendly capitals in the world. The city centre is compact, flat, and safe, making it easy to navigate with pushchairs or on rented cargo bikes. The crown jewel is Tivoli Gardens, located right next to the central station. Unlike generic theme parks, Tivoli offers a mix of beautiful flower gardens, historic architecture, and rides ranging from gentle vintage cars to high-speed roller coasters. It looks especially magical at night when thousands of coloured lights are switched on. Just outside the city centre, the Copenhagen Zoo in Frederiksberg features a stunning Norman Foster-designed Elephant House and a Polar Bear enclosure where you can watch the bears swim underwater.

Water is a key element of the city. A canal tour is an essential and relaxing way to see the sights, including the Opera House and the famous Little Mermaid statue, without tiring out little legs. In summer, the harbour water is clean enough for swimming, and designated harbour baths like Islands Brygge offer safe, enclosed pools for children. For rainy days, the city offers world-class indoor attractions. The Experimentarium in Hellerup is a massive interactive science centre where kids can touch everything, play with bubbles, and test their senses. The National Aquarium Denmark (Den Blå Planet), shaped like a whirlpool, allows families to walk through tunnels surrounded by hammerhead sharks and rays.

Dining in Copenhagen is easy with kids; street food markets like Reffen offer a wide variety of foods in a relaxed, outdoor setting where noise and running around are welcome. Public transport is reliable, with the driverless Metro system being an attraction in itself—children love sitting in the front window seat to 'drive' the train. Whether you are watching the Changing of the Royal Guard at Amalienborg Palace or playing on the trampolines built into the pavements at Havnegade, Copenhagen creates space for children everywhere.
