Tbilisi

Cable cars and cobblestones in the capital 🚋

Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, is a multi-layered city built along the banks of the Mtkvari River and surrounded by hills. For families, it serves as the perfect introduction to the country, blending ancient history with modern parks and entertainment. The city is best explored on foot, though the terrain can be hilly, so comfortable shoes are a must. The climate is continental, meaning hot summers and chilly winters, with spring and autumn being the most pleasant times to explore.

The historic Old Town (Dzveli Tbilisi) is a maze of narrow streets and wooden balconies. A major highlight for kids is the Rezo Gabriadze Marionette Theatre, which features a quirky leaning clock tower; at noon and 7 PM, a small mechanical angel strikes the bell, and a puppet circle of life show plays out. Just a short walk away is the futuristic Rike Park, where you can catch the aerial cable car up to the Narikala Fortress. The ride is gentle, offering great views, and leads to the Mother of Georgia statue and the National Botanical Garden, which has a lovely waterfall and playground.

For a full day of fun, families should head to Mtatsminda Park. Accessible by a steep and exciting funicular train ride, this landscaped park sits at the highest point of the city. It features a dinosaur zone, water slides, carousels, and a giant Ferris wheel visible from almost anywhere in the city. Another unique spot is the Chronicles of Georgia, a massive stone monument near the Tbilisi Sea (a large reservoir) that looks like a Georgian Stonehenge and offers plenty of space for kids to run around away from the city traffic. Tbilisi is generally safe, but traffic can be chaotic, so always use designated crossings or underpasses.
