Jerash & North

Explore Roman ruins and medieval castles in the green north ⚔️

Northern Jordan offers a surprising contrast to the arid landscapes of the south, characterized by rolling green hills, pine forests, and olive groves. The crown jewel of the region is Jerash, widely regarded as one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities in the world. For families, Jerash is an open-air playground of history. Unlike many European ruins where access is restricted, here children can walk down the original paved Cardo, touch the limestone columns, and sit in the seats of the South Theatre. The site is massive, so sturdy walking shoes are a must.

A highlight for many families visiting Jerash is the Roman Army and Chariot Experience held at the Hippodrome. This live reenactment features costumed legionaries demonstrating military formations and gladiatorial combat, culminating in a full-speed chariot race that brings the ancient venue to life in a way that static ruins cannot. It provides context that helps younger visitors understand the scale and noise of the history they are walking through. The sheer size of the Oval Plaza and the Temple of Artemis allows energetic kids to burn off energy while parents take in the architecture.

A short drive from Jerash lies Ajloun, home to a formidable 12th-century fortress built to defend against Crusader armies. Ajloun Castle sits atop a high peak and is a maze of vaulted ceilings, dark passages, and spiral staircases that invite exploration. From the battlements, families can see all the way to the Jordan Valley. Nearby, the Ajloun Forest Reserve offers a different type of experience with easy hiking trails through evergreen oaks and pistachio trees. It is a popular spot for locals to picnic on weekends and offers a cool, shady retreat in summer. Further north, the site of Umm Qais (Gadara) offers ruins built out of striking black basalt stone and panoramic views over the Sea of Galilee and the Golan Heights, providing a geography lesson alongside the history.

Activities & Best Times

City & Cultural Excellent

Urban tourism, museums, historical sites, architecture

Jerash is one of the world's most complete Roman provincial cities, offering an authentic 'time travel' experience that rivals Pompeii or Ephesus. Peak months (Apr-May, Oct) offer perfect temperatures for exploring the vast outdoor ruins; summer is punishingly hot (max 37°C), while winter's chill and rain can dampen the experience of the unshaded site.

Adventure & Nature Very Good

Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism

The Ajloun Forest Reserve and Dibbeen Forest offer a rare Mediterranean ecosystem in the Middle East, featuring hiking trails through oak and pistachio trees. Spring (Mar-May) is the peak season when the landscape is spectacularly lush and wildflowers are in bloom; summer is too dry and hot for active exploration, and winter months are often too muddy and cold (8°C avg).

Educational & Exploratory Very Good

Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education

While Jerash is an extraordinary archaeological site with high educational value, the region lacks dedicated educational infrastructure (museums, discovery centres, interpretive facilities) that would place it alongside top global educational destinations. The attraction evidence shows historic sites and natural features but no museum or educational facility. Very_good more accurately reflects outstanding but not globally benchmark educational tourism.

Road Trips & Scenic Very Good

Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel

The drive from Amman to Umm Qais via the rolling green hills of the north offers world-class vistas of the Jordan Valley and Sea of Galilee. Spring and late autumn offer the most vibrant landscape colors and clear visibility; peak summer heat creates a hazy atmosphere, while January's low temperatures and higher precipitation (16mm) can make driving less scenic.

Festivals & Seasonal Good

Events, celebrations, seasonal attractions

The Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts (July) brings world-class performances to the Roman theaters, though summer heat is a factor. The autumn olive harvest (Oct-Nov) provides a highly authentic, tactile experience for families to engage with local agrarian traditions; winter and spring lack significant internationally-relevant cultural events.

Relaxation & Wellness Good

Spa retreats, wellness centers, peaceful getaways

Eco-luxury retreats and forest lodges in Ajloun provide a peaceful, 'slow-travel' alternative to Jordan's more commercial centers. Mild spring and autumn temperatures (15-24°C) are ideal for forest meditation and outdoor relaxation; the lack of climate control in authentic eco-lodges makes the extreme heat of July/August and winter lows of 3°C uncomfortable.

Sports & Active Good

Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation

The hilly terrain of Irbid and Ajloun offers excellent cycling and trekking opportunities through ancient olive groves. Peak weather in spring provides the necessary moderate temperatures for physical exertion; peak summer (Jul-Aug) is dangerously hot for sports, and winter rainfall can make rural trails impassable.
