Mount Kenya region

Highland adventures and rhino sanctuaries 🏔️🦏

The Mount Kenya region and the Laikipia plateau offer a refreshing change of climate and scenery. Dominated by the jagged peaks of Mount Kenya (5,199m), the landscape is a mix of lush rainforests, alpine moorlands, and high-altitude savannahs. The weather here is cooler and less humid than the coast or the low-lying parks, which can be much more comfortable for young children and infants.

A standout destination for families is the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. It is renowned for its high density of wildlife and pioneering conservation work. Here, families can visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only place in Kenya to see these primates, who have been rescued from black markets. Ol Pejeta is also home to the last two remaining northern white rhinos on the planet, offering a poignant and educational experience for older children. The conservancy is relatively compact, meaning game drives are fruitful without being exhausting.

Nearby, the Aberdare National Park offers a fairy-tale landscape of dense forests and plunging waterfalls. It is a great location for spotting forest elephants and the shy bongo antelope. Several lodges in this area are built like "arks" overlooking floodlit waterholes, allowing families to watch animals come to drink at night without leaving the comfort of their accommodation.

For active families, the foothills of Mount Kenya offer opportunities for trout fishing, horse riding, and gentle forest hikes that don't require technical climbing gear. Standing at the Equator marker near Nanyuki for a photo opportunity is a fun geography lesson for students. The region combines the thrill of the safari with the fascinating conservation stories that will inspire the next generation of wildlife protectors.

Activities & Best Times

Adventure & Nature Excellent

Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism

World-class private conservancies like Ol Pejeta offer unique, malaria-free rhino and chimpanzee viewing in an authentic wilderness setting with high-end lodge infrastructure. Peak dry months provide optimal wildlife visibility and trail conditions, while heavy rains in April, October, and November make forest trails and tracks difficult to navigate.

Educational & Exploratory Very Good

Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education

Spa retreats, wellness centers, peaceful getaways

Theme Park & Entertainment Good

Amusement parks, family entertainment venues

Offers world-class, conservation-focused family entertainment such as the Mount Kenya Safari Club's animal orphanage and high-end sanctuary experiences.
