The South Coast is arguably the most popular region for family holidays, anchored by the historic Galle Fort. This 17th-century walled city is entirely car-free in many parts, allowing parents to push strollers or let children walk safely along the cobblestone streets lined with cafes, gelaterias, and boutiques. A sunset walk along the ramparts to see the lighthouse and watch cliff divers is a daily ritual here.
Just outside Galle, the coastline is strung with diverse beach towns. Unawatuna offers a protected bay perfect for swimming, while Weligama is famous for its gentle sand-bottomed break, making it the ideal place for children to take their first surfing lesson. Mirissa is the hub for whale watching; boats depart daily to spot blue whales and sperm whales, though families should choose reputable operators who respect animal welfare guidelines.
