Ulcinj & Southern Coast

Endless sandy beaches and pirate legends 🏴‍☠️🪁

Ulcinj and the Southern Coast stand out from the rest of Montenegro due to their unique geography and cultural flair. While the north is rocky, this region is defined by Velika Plaža (Long Beach), a 12-kilometer stretch of fine, dark sand that is rich in minerals. For parents of toddlers, this is the safest swimming spot in the country; the sea floor slopes so gently that you can walk out for nearly a hundred meters with the water only reaching your knees. The wide, open horizon and consistent thermal winds also make this a world-class destination for kitesurfing—even if you don't ride, children will be mesmerized by the sky filled with colorful kites.

The town of Ulcinj itself has a distinct oriental atmosphere, with minarets rising above the skyline and a history deeply rooted in pirate lore. The Old Town (Stari Grad), perched atop a cliff overlooking the sea, is a fortified stone citadel where legend says Cervantes was once held captive. It’s less polished than Budva or Kotor, giving it a raw, authentic charm that adventurous families appreciate. Nearby, the Valdanos cove offers a different experience, surrounded by a forest of ancient olive trees, some over 2,000 years old. Walking through these groves feels like stepping back in time.

At the very southern tip lies Ada Bojana, a river island formed by the Buna River delta. Here, freshwater meets the sea, and families can dine at wooden restaurants on stilts that serve the catch of the day straight from the nets. The atmosphere in the south is noticeably more laid-back and often more affordable than the northern coast. Accommodation ranges from luxury hotels to camping sites and wooden bungalows along the beach. Families should be aware that a car is highly recommended here, as the distances between the Old Town and the best sandy beaches are too long to walk, but the reward is finding your own private patch of sand even in the height of summer.
