Durmitor & Northern Mountains

majestic peaks and emerald lakes for family adventures 🌲🏔️

Durmitor and the Northern Mountains offer a complete change of pace and climate from the coast, making it an essential stop for nature-loving families. Centered around the town of Žabljak—the highest town in the Balkans—this region features dramatic limestone peaks, glacial lakes known as "mountain eyes," and deep pine forests. Even in the height of summer, temperatures here remain pleasant and nights are cool enough for light jackets, providing a welcome respite for children struggling with the seaside heat. The landscape is vast and open, allowing kids to run freely in green meadows filled with wildflowers.

The crown jewel for families is the Black Lake (Crno Jezero), located just a short walk from Žabljak's center. A flat, shaded path circles the lake, dotted with benches and picnic spots, making it accessible even for off-road strollers. Nearby, the Tara River Canyon, the deepest in Europe, offers spectacular sights. The majestic Đurđevića Tara Bridge is a thrill to walk across, and families with older children can try the zip lines running parallel to it. For a truly memorable experience, book a family rafting tour on the Tara River; summer water levels are typically low and gentle, turning the river into a fun, splashing turquoise highway suitable for kids as young as four or five.

Accommodation in the north often consists of cozy A-frame wooden cabins or "etno selo" (ethno villages) where families can experience traditional mountain living. Food here is hearty and organic—don't miss the kačamak (a cheesy cornmeal porridge) and fresh sour milk, which provide plenty of energy for hiking. Besides Durmitor, the nearby Biogradska Gora National Park offers one of Europe's last three primeval forests, with an extremely accessible lake walk that feels like stepping into a fairy tale. Whether it's spotting squirrels, picking wild berries, or riding the chairlift to Savin Kuk for panoramic views, the north reconnects families with nature in its purest form.

Activities & Best Times

Adventure & Nature Excellent

Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism

Home to the UNESCO-listed Durmitor National Park and Europe's deepest canyon (Tara), offering truly world-class alpine wilderness and glacial lakes. Peak summer months provide the only reliable window for high-altitude hiking and canyon exploration with minimal rainfall; shoulder months offer stunning flora and autumn colors but increased precipitation.

Sports & Active Excellent

Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation

Offers world-class whitewater rafting on the Tara River and unique canyoning experiences like the Nevidio Canyon. July and August are peak for family-friendly water levels and warmth; May and June provide high-adrenaline rafting for experts, while extreme autumn/winter rainfall and cold temperatures make activities unsuitable for most of the year.

Road Trips & Scenic Very Good

Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel

The 'Durmitor Ring' is one of Europe's most spectacular high-altitude drives, rivaling Alpine passes for dramatic vistas and authenticity. Peak months ensure all high mountain passes (like P14) are snow-free and dry; shoulder months are beautiful but risky due to lingering snow or heavy rain (up to 147mm), while winter brings dangerous conditions and road closures.

Educational & Exploratory Good

Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education

Significant geological and ecological educational value centered around the UNESCO World Heritage status and glacial 'Mountain Eyes.' Peak summer allows access to interpretative centers and guided ecological tours; off-season weather is too severe for the field-based learning sophisticated families would expect.

Ski & Snow Good

Winter sports, ski resorts, snow activities

Authentic, high-altitude winter sports hub in Žabljak with reliable snow cover and a charming, uncommercialized atmosphere. While it lacks the massive interconnected lift systems of the top-tier Swiss Alps, it offers a genuine mountain experience in Jan-Feb; Dec and March have more variable snow quality and higher precipitation.

Relaxation & Wellness Marginal

Spa retreats, wellness centers, peaceful getaways

Provides exceptional natural serenity and 'forest bathing' opportunities, though it lacks the world-class, high-end luxury spa infrastructure found in more developed mountain regions. The peak summer months are the only time the climate supports the outdoor-focused wellness activities that define this region's appeal.
