Mavrovo & Western Mountains

Mountain adventures for every season 🏔️

Covering a vast area of canyons, pine forests, and karst fields, Mavrovo & Western Mountains is the premier destination for families seeking outdoor adventure and fresh mountain air. At the heart of the region lies Mavrovo National Park, the largest of the country's three national parks. The landscape is dominated by Mavrovo Lake, famous for the semi-submerged Church of Saint Nicholas. In summer, the water level drops, allowing children to walk right up to the ruins of the old stone church, while in winter, it appears to float on the icy water.

During the winter months, the Zare Lazareski Ski Centre operates on the slopes of Mount Bistra. It is particularly well-suited for families, offering ski schools, equipment rental, and relatively gentle slopes perfect for beginners and children. In the summer, these same chairlifts offer scenic rides up the mountain for hikers to observe the local flora and perhaps spot wild horses grazing in the high pastures.

A drive through the winding Radika River Canyon leads to the stunning Saint Jovan Bigorski Monastery. Perched on a steep hillside, this active monastery is renowned for its intricate wooden iconostasis. While it is a place of quiet reflection, the complex architecture and mountain views often captivate younger visitors. Further along the road towards Debar, the village of Janče offers traditional architecture and local slow-food restaurants where families can try local mountain specialties.

High above the canyon sits the legendary village of Galichnik. Famous for its traditional wedding festival in July, the village is accessible by a paved road that offers spectacular views. Families can visit local sheepfolds to see how the famous Galichnik cheese is produced. The area is also excellent for horse riding, with local guides offering tours suitable for various skill levels.

The region has a cooler climate than the rest of the country, making it a refreshing escape during the hot summer months. Accommodation ranges from luxury hotels in Mavrovo to cozy, family-run guesthouses in the traditional villages, providing options for every budget.
