Eastern Macedonia (Štip, wine country)
Ancient ruins and golden vineyards 🍇
Eastern Macedonia offers a distinct contrast to the mountainous west, featuring rolling hills, vast agricultural plains, and some of the country's most significant archaeological sites. For families who prefer off-the-beaten-path travel, this region provides a look into the authentic rural life of North Macedonia without the crowds found in the main tourist hubs.
The city of Štip serves as the main urban center and a great base for exploration. Families can walk up to the remains of the Isar Fortress for a view over the city or visit the city museum. A culinary highlight here is the Pastrmajlija, a boat-shaped bread topped with meat and spices that is often a hit with children who enjoy pizza. Just outside the city lie the ruins of the ancient town of Bargala, where kids can walk among visible foundations of basilicas and city walls dating back to the late Roman period.
To the south lies the Tikveš region, the heart of the country's wine production. While wine tasting is for adults, many local wineries have developed family-friendly agritourism experiences, offering large gardens, fresh grape juice, and farm-to-table meals in a relaxed setting. Nearby, the town of Kavadarci hosts an annual wine harvest festival in September that fills the streets with music and food.
Further east, the landscape changes near Kočani, known for its extensive rice terraces—a rare sight in Europe. The water-filled fields attract storks and other birdlife, making for interesting nature spotting. For a complete change of scenery, families can head to the Maleshevo Mountains and the town of Berovo. Often called "Little Switzerland," this area is famous for its fresh mountain air, pine forests, and the serene Berovo Lake. It is an ideal spot for easy family hikes, kayaking on the lake, or simply escaping the summer heat.
Practical travel in this region is best done by car, as public transport between smaller sites can be infrequent. The terrain is generally flatter and the roads are less winding than in the western mountains, making for easier driving conditions for those prone to car sickness.

Activities & Best Times
Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel
Scenic routes through sun-drenched vineyards and rolling golden hills offer a high-quality sense of discovery for sophisticated travelers. Peak months feature the visual beauty of spring blooms or autumn harvests, while winter months present poor visibility and potentially hazardous road conditions.
Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism
The region offers authentic exploration of the Belasica and Plačkovica mountains and the stunning Strumica waterfalls (Smolare, Kolešino). Peak months offer mild temperatures (19-24°C) ideal for hiking, while the intense heat of July/August and winter frost create more challenging conditions.
Urban tourism, museums, historical sites, architecture
Štip serves as a gateway to deep-rooted Byzantine and Roman history, including the ancient city of Bargala, away from typical tourist crowds. Spring and autumn provide the most comfortable climate for exploring open-air archaeological sites and navigating the vibrant traditional markets.
Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education
Families can explore significant Roman ruins and learn about the region's ancient viticulture and silk-making traditions. Peak months align with clear weather and full operational hours for guided historical tours, though winter closures limit the educational experience.
Events, celebrations, seasonal attractions
The Strumica Carnival and autumn wine harvest festivals offer genuine cultural immersion with international regional significance. Peak months center on these traditional celebration periods, despite cooler weather in February/March, while other months lack major internationally-appealing events.
Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation
Ideal terrain for cycling through vineyard-lined valleys and hiking to remote mountain waterfalls. Peak conditions avoid the peak summer temperatures of 31°C+ and the freezing winter months, ensuring a safe and enjoyable active holiday for families.
Spa retreats, wellness centers, peaceful getaways
Thermal springs like Kežovica and Bansko offer authentic, localized spa experiences, though they lack the high-end luxury infrastructure of global wellness hubs. Best visited in milder seasons when outdoor relaxation is pleasant; winter facilities may feel basic for discerning travelers.
