Eastern Macedonia (Štip, wine country)

Eastern Macedonia offers a distinct contrast to the mountainous west, featuring rolling hills, vast agricultural plains, and some of the country's most significant archaeological sites. For families who prefer off-the-beaten-path travel, this region provides a look into the authentic rural life of North Macedonia without the crowds found in the main tourist hubs.

The city of Štip serves as the main urban center and a great base for exploration. Families can walk up to the remains of the Isar Fortress for a view over the city or visit the city museum. A culinary highlight here is the Pastrmajlija, a boat-shaped bread topped with meat and spices that is often a hit with children who enjoy pizza. Just outside the city lie the ruins of the ancient town of Bargala, where kids can walk among visible foundations of basilicas and city walls dating back to the late Roman period.

To the south lies the Tikveš region, the heart of the country's wine production. While wine tasting is for adults, many local wineries have developed family-friendly agritourism experiences, offering large gardens, fresh grape juice, and farm-to-table meals in a relaxed setting. Nearby, the town of Kavadarci hosts an annual wine harvest festival in September that fills the streets with music and food.

Further east, the landscape changes near Kočani, known for its extensive rice terraces—a rare sight in Europe. The water-filled fields attract storks and other birdlife, making for interesting nature spotting. For a complete change of scenery, families can head to the Maleshevo Mountains and the town of Berovo. Often called "Little Switzerland," this area is famous for its fresh mountain air, pine forests, and the serene Berovo Lake. It is an ideal spot for easy family hikes, kayaking on the lake, or simply escaping the summer heat.

Practical travel in this region is best done by car, as public transport between smaller sites can be infrequent. The terrain is generally flatter and the roads are less winding than in the western mountains, making for easier driving conditions for those prone to car sickness.
