Western Mongolia (Altai)

Soaring peaks and eagle hunters 🦅

Western Mongolia is a destination for the truly adventurous family. Dominated by the soaring peaks of the Altai Mountains, this region feels almost like a different country due to its predominantly Kazakh population. The culture here is distinct, with Islam being the main religion and Kazakh the primary language. For families with teenagers or older children who can handle long travel days, the West offers profound cultural lessons and spectacular high-mountain scenery.

The most iconic experience here is meeting the Eagle Hunters. Families can visit local homes to see the magnificent Golden Eagles up close and learn how they are trained to hunt foxes and hares. Seeing an eagle perched on a specific arm guard is a memorable photo opportunity and a chance to discuss animal husbandry and tradition. If you visit in early October, the Golden Eagle Festival is a chaotic, vibrant display of skills that is thrilling to watch, though crowds can be large.

Nature lovers head to Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. The scenery includes snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and pristine alpine lakes like Khoton and Khurgan. Exploring the ancient petroglyph complexes scattered across the rocks is like a treasure hunt for history; these carvings date back thousands of years and depict hunting scenes and wild animals. Hiking trails vary in difficulty, but the terrain is generally rocky and steep, requiring good footwear and stamina.

Important considerations for families: This is the most remote part of Mongolia. Reaching Olgii usually requires a 3-hour flight from Ulaanbaatar. Once there, travel is exclusively by 4WD on very rough, unpaved tracks. Facilities are basic; toilets are almost always pit latrines, and showers may be unavailable for days. Medical facilities are limited. Consequently, this region is recommended for families who are experienced in outdoor travel and camping. Younger children may struggle with the harsh conditions and lack of comfort.

For those willing to make the journey, the hospitality of the Kazakh nomads is legendary. Tea and fried dough (baursak) are offered at every stop. The combination of jagged mountains, rich cultural tapestry, and the sheer scale of the wilderness makes the Altai a bucket-list destination for resilient, nature-loving families.
