Tinian
Ancient stones, ocean sprays, and living history ๐
Tinian offers a distinct change of pace from its neighbor Saipan, feeling more like a rural village than a tourist destination. It is an island of history and geology, best suited for families who enjoy self-guided exploration. The most exciting natural attraction for children is the Tinian Blowhole on the northeast coast. On rough days, the ocean forces water through coral caverns to shoot geysers up to 20 feet in the air, creating a thundering sound and misty spray that delights visitors of all ages.
For swimming, Taga Beach is the island's crown jewel. Situated at the base of small cliffs, the water is incredibly clear and often calm. Older children and teenagers often enjoy jumping from the low cliff ledges into the deep turquoise water, while toddlers can play safely in the sandy shallows. Nearby, the House of Taga features the largest standing latte stones (ancient stone pillars) in the Marianas, providing a tangible history lesson about the indigenous Chamorro culture.
The island also holds significant World War II history. Families can drive freely onto the runways of North Field, where the planes carrying the atomic bombs took off. Glass enclosures over the loading pits serve as sobering educational markers for older children learning about global history. The roads here are wide and empty, making driving stress-free.
Tinian is reached via a 10-minute flight from Saipan on Star Marianas Air; there is currently no ferry service. A rental car is absolutely necessary to see the sights, as there is no public transport and attractions are spread out. Services are limited compared to Saipan, so families should pack snacks and essentials before heading out for the day.

Activities & Best Times
Beach resorts, marine activities: diving, snorkelling, kite surfing, wind surfing, sailing
Tinian offers secluded, crystal-clear turquoise coves like Tachogna Beach that provide a level of privacy and authenticity rare in commercialized Pacific destinations. The dry season (Jan-May) features optimal water visibility and calm seas, while the summer monsoon brings heavy rainfall and higher humidity.
Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education
Home to the globally significant North Field WWII site and the prehistoric House of Taga, the island offers a profound educational journey for sophisticated travelers. These outdoor archaeological sites are best experienced during the drier months to avoid the intense tropical downpours of the wet season.
Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism
Features dramatic limestone blowholes and rugged coastal trails through pristine, uncommercialized environments. Peak conditions from January to May provide the necessary visibility and safe trail conditions for families to explore the island's unique geological features.
Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation
High-quality shore diving and snorkeling in reefs with exceptional marine biodiversity and underwater visibility. The dry season ensures the calmest sea states, which is critical for accessing Tinian's more remote marine spots and ensuring safe conditions for children.
Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel
A small but rewarding destination for a self-drive day trip to reach remote WWII runways and hidden coves. The dry season ensures safe driving on the island's more basic rural roads, whereas heavy tropical downpours can limit visibility and access to unpaved areas.
