Nyika Plateau

Nyika National Park offers a startlingly different experience from the rest of tropical Malawi. Situated on a high plateau in the north, the landscape resembles the Scottish Highlands, with rolling granite domes and vast grasslands covered in wildflowers. The air here is crisp and cool, a refreshing change from the humidity of the lake and river valleys. This unique geography makes it the only place in Malawi where families can enjoy roaring log fires in the evenings after a day of exploration.

The wildlife experience on the plateau is distinct and relaxed. Large herds of zebra, roan antelope, and eland roam the open hills. Because the grass is short and visibility is high, spotting animals is easy even for young children. The absence of large prides of lions (though leopards are present but shy) allows for unique activities like walking safaris and mountain biking. Older children will love the freedom of riding bikes along the dirt tracks, passing herds of antelope safely. The area is also famous for its orchids and butterflies, adding a layer of small-scale discovery for nature-loving kids.

Accommodation is centered around Chelinda, where stone cottages and log cabins provide a rustic but comfortable base. The isolation is part of the charm; there is no light pollution, making the stargazing absolutely spectacular. Families should be prepared for the journey—it is a long drive from Lilongwe or the lake, often requiring a 4x4 vehicle, but the solitude is the reward.

Due to the altitude (over 2,000 meters), temperatures can drop near freezing at night, so packing warm fleece jackets, hats, and trousers is mandatory. While the height reduces mosquito activity significantly, it is still wise to take standard health precautions. Nyika is best suited for families who enjoy hiking, open spaces, and a slower, more atmospheric safari pace.
