Southern Andes & Inca Heartland

Land of Incas and floating islands 🦙🚂

The Southern Andes is the crown jewel of Peruvian tourism and the region most families dream of visiting. The adventure usually begins in Cusco, the ancient Inca capital. While the city is beautiful, its high altitude means families should take it easy for the first day. Kids enjoy spotting the twelve-angled stone in the Inca walls and visiting the ChocoMuseo for a chocolate-making workshop. A short drive away, the Sacred Valley is lower in elevation and warmer, making it a perfect base. Here, the Awanacancha center allows children to feed llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas, providing the perfect photo opportunity with these fluffy native animals.

The journey to Machu Picchu is an adventure in itself, involving a scenic train ride along the Urubamba River that mesmerizes children with views of snow-capped peaks and jungle vegetation. Once at the ruins, the sense of discovery is palpable. While strollers aren't allowed, the site is navigable for school-aged children, and the resident llamas grazing on the terraces are always a hit. Nearby in Ollantaytambo, the fortress ruins offer a chance to climb grand stone staircases and explore a living Inca town where water still flows through ancient canals.

Further south lies Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. From the city of Puno, families can take boats to the Uros Floating Islands. These man-made islands are constructed entirely from totora reeds, and the local people are welcoming to visitors, often showing children how they build their homes and boats. It is a unique cultural lesson that feels like stepping into a different world. Throughout this region, the key to a successful family trip is managing the altitude—staying hydrated, eating light meals, and allowing time for rest ensures everyone enjoys the breathtaking history and scenery.
