Azores

A volcanic playground of whales, craters, and thermal pools 🐋🌋

The Azores are often described as the "Hawaii of Europe," a dramatic archipelago where nature takes center stage. For active families, this is a paradise of discovery. The largest island, São Miguel, is the most accessible and offers a condensed version of the archipelago's wonders. Here, you can visit the twin lakes of Sete Cidades—one blue, one green—nestled inside a massive volcanic crater. Easy hiking trails allow even younger children to enjoy the lush, green views without too much strain.

One of the most magical experiences for kids is seeing steam rise from the ground in Furnas. Locals use the volcanic heat to cook Cozido, a meat and vegetable stew buried underground—a lunch process that fascinates children. Afterwards, the whole family can soak in the thermal pools at Terra Nostra Park. The water is yellow-brown due to iron (wear dark swimwear!), but it's warm and relaxing, surrounded by a botanical garden that feels like a jungle.

The Azores are one of the world's best places for whale and dolphin watching. Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) offer fast-paced tours for older kids, while larger catamarans provide a stable platform for little ones to spot giant sperm whales and playful pods of dolphins. The islands are also full of cows, often seen grazing on steep slopes or even on the roads, which is always a hit with animal-loving toddlers.

Weather here can be unpredictable, with locals joking you can experience four seasons in one day. Packing layers and waterproofs is essential. While there are few sandy beaches, the unique natural ocean pools formed by lava rocks offer safe, enclosed swimming areas protected from the open waves.

Activities & Best Times

Adventure & Nature Excellent

Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism

A world-class destination for cetacean encounters and volcanic trekking through prehistoric laurel forests. Peak months offer the best visibility for crater views and calmest seas for whale watching; off-season rainfall exceeds 120mm, often obscuring views with heavy Atlantic mist.

Relaxation & Wellness Very Good

Spa retreats, wellness centers, peaceful getaways

Renowned for authentic geothermal experiences, particularly the iron-rich thermal pools of Furnas and ocean-fed hot springs. Summer months provide the most comfortable ambient temperatures for transitioning between pools; high winter humidity and heavy rain can degrade the outdoor spa experience.

Road Trips & Scenic Very Good

Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel

Features spectacular coastal drives and winding routes through iconic hydrangeas and volcanic calderas. Peak summer offers the clear skies essential for panoramic island views; winter months are prone to dense fog and heavy rainfall that make mountain driving hazardous and less scenic.

Sports & Active Very Good

Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation

Offers elite-level canyoning, world-class diving with manta rays, and high-quality Atlantic surfing. Peak summer aligns with optimal diving visibility and safe canyoning conditions; winter sees excellent surf breaks but heavy rain limits other outdoor pursuits.

Beach & Sea Good

Beach resorts, marine activities: diving, snorkelling, kite surfing, wind surfing, sailing

Unique black sand beaches and high-clarity waters for snorkeling and diving, though air temperatures rarely reach tropical levels. Peak months provide the warmest water (avg 22-23°C) and lowest rainfall; winter seas are too rough and air temps too cool for beach leisure.

City & Cultural Good

Urban tourism, museums, historical sites, architecture

The UNESCO-listed Angra do Heroísmo and the elegant plazas of Ponta Delgada offer a sophisticated, authentic glimpse into Portuguese maritime history. Optimal in late spring and summer for walking tours and outdoor dining; winter's persistent rainfall makes urban exploration less appealing.

Educational & Exploratory Good

Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education

Exceptional scientific interest regarding volcanology at the Capelinhos Interpretive Centre and marine biology research. Peak months allow for fieldwork and easier access to remote geological sites; off-season weather often restricts access to outdoor educational sites.

Festivals & Seasonal Marginal

Events, celebrations, seasonal attractions

Features the unique 'Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres' in May and 'Sanjoaninas' in June, showcasing deep-rooted religious and folk traditions. These events are culturally significant but seasonal; the rest of the year offers little in terms of major international-caliber festivals.
