Småland & Glasriket
Pippi Longstocking's home & magical deep forests 🌲
Småland is often described as the most "Swedish" of landscapes, filled with deep green spruce forests, glittering lakes, and red wooden cottages with white trim. For families, the region's undisputed highlight is Astrid Lindgren’s World in Vimmerby. This is not a typical theme park with roller coasters, but a vast theater park where stories like Pippi Longstocking and Emil of Lönneberga are performed by professional actors on sets that children can explore. Kids can play in Villa Villekulla, run around Mattis's Fort, and interact with the characters throughout the day. It is an immersive literary experience that resonates deeply with children familiar with the books.
Nature is the other great attraction here. Småland is known for its Moose Parks (Älgparker), such as those in Glasriket or near Markaryd. In these parks, families can often drive their own cars or take a tractor train through enclosures to see the "King of the Forest" up close—a guaranteed hit for animal lovers. For a more tactile experience, visit the Kingdom of Crystal (Glasriket), a cluster of historic glassworks. Many studios, like Kosta Boda, offer activities where children can try blowing their own glass or painting glass figures, providing a unique souvenir.
On the coast lies the historic city of Kalmar, dominated by Kalmar Castle. The castle is exceptionally well-managed for tourists, offering a "Children's Castle" program in summer where kids can dress up as knights and princesses, complete challenges, and get knighted in the hall. Just across a 6km bridge from Kalmar is the island of Öland, a summer paradise with shallow sandy beaches and Ölands Djur & Nöjespark, a combined zoo and amusement park. For families seeking action, High Chaparral is a Wild West theme park in the western part of Småland featuring stunt shows, gold panning, and steam trains. The region is best explored by car, allowing you to stop for impromptu picnics by the many lakes.

Activities & Best Times
Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism
Authentic 'fairytale' forests and over 5,000 lakes provide a high-quality wilderness experience for families, including world-class moose safaris. Peak summer months offer long daylight hours and optimal trail conditions; winter is often too dark and damp for wilderness exploration.
Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel
Features quintessentially Swedish scenery with iconic red cottages and well-maintained forest routes that are safe and scenic for families. Summer offers peak visibility and lush landscapes; winter months present hazardous icy conditions and very limited daylight.
Amusement parks, family entertainment venues
Home to Astrid Lindgren's World, a world-class example of authentic, literature-based immersive theater that avoids commercialized tropes. The park operates fully in summer (Jun-Aug) but closes for most of the winter, making off-season visits unsuitable.
Urban tourism, museums, historical sites, architecture
The 'Kingdom of Crystal' offers a unique artisanal heritage with master glassblowers that is globally recognized for its craftsmanship. While culturally significant, it lacks the urban density of a major world city, with many studios having reduced winter hours.
Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education
The IKEA Museum in Älmhult and interactive glass-blowing workshops provide high-quality educational insights into design and industry. Peak months align with full program availability, whereas winter months see fewer guided educational experiences.
Events, celebrations, seasonal attractions
Offers quintessential Swedish Midsummer celebrations in June and authentic Christmas markets in historic settings like Kalmar Castle in December. These peak moments provide the most authentic cultural immersion, though the region is quiet outside these specific event windows.
Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation
Excellent terrain for cycling and calm-water kayaking through vast lake systems like Lake Åsnen. Optimal weather occurs in mid-summer; shoulder seasons are crisp but good for cycling, while winter brings frozen lakes and unsuitable biking weather.
Beach resorts, marine activities: diving, snorkelling, kite surfing, wind surfing, sailing
While the region features hundreds of scenic lakes, water temperatures rarely meet international standards for comfortable swimming. Summer provides 'shoulder' conditions suitable for brief lake dips and boating, but the region does not offer a world-class beach resort experience.
Spa retreats, wellness centers, peaceful getaways
Features unique boutique wellness at locations like the Kosta Boda Art Hotel, blending spa culture with art. While high-quality, it is a niche offering compared to global wellness hubs, with peak appeal during the warm summer lakeside season.
