Tibesti & Ennedi (north)
A landscape of ancient rock art and dramatic desert peaks 🐪
⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: Due to the high risk of kidnapping, terrorism, and armed banditry, government agencies (including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand) advise travelers to avoid all travel to the Tibesti and Ennedi regions. These areas are extremely remote with little to no emergency support. Families are strongly urged to consult their own government's official travel advisory before considering a trip, as circumstances and risk assessments vary.
The northern regions of Chad contain some of the most spectacular desert landscapes on Earth. The Ennedi Massif, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a vast sandstone plateau eroded by wind and water into towering arches, deep canyons, and mushroom-shaped pillars. For families with older teenagers interested in geology and history, this area is an open-air museum. The region is famous for thousands of prehistoric rock paintings and engravings that depict a time when the Sahara was a verdant grassland teeming with wildlife.
One of the most iconic sights is the Guelta d'Archei, a zoological marvel where water persists year-round in a deep canyon. It is one of the last places in the Sahara where the Nile crocodile survives. Travelers can watch hundreds of camels descend into the canyon to drink, their calls echoing off the sheer rock walls—a sensory experience unlike any other. Further north lies the Tibesti Mountains, a volcanic range that includes Emi Koussi, the highest point in the Sahara. To the east, the Ounianga Lakes present a surreal image of blue, saline lakes surrounded by golden sand dunes.
Visiting this region is a serious expedition, not a standard holiday. There are no hotels; accommodation consists of bivouac camping under the stars. The journey requires 4x4 vehicles, experienced drivers, and often a security escort. The climate is extreme, with scorching days and freezing nights during winter. While the natural beauty is undeniable, the logistical challenges and severe safety risks mean this destination is only suitable for the most seasoned travelers utilizing specialized expedition operators.

Activities & Best Times
Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism
This is a premier global destination for Saharan exploration, featuring the UNESCO-listed Ennedi Massif and the volcanic Tibesti Mountains. Peak winter months offer the only safe and comfortable window (12-30°C) for desert expeditions, while the extreme summer heat exceeding 40°C makes the region dangerous and inaccessible for families.
Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education
The region offers profound educational value through its world-class Neolithic rock art sites and the unique hydro-geology of the Lakes of Ounianga. The cool winter season is the only viable time for guided archaeological and geological study; extreme temperatures in other months restrict outdoor learning and site access.
Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation
Offers world-class opportunities for high-end desert trekking, 4x4 navigation, and rock exploration in a pristine, non-commercialized environment. Active pursuits are strictly limited to the winter window to avoid heat exhaustion, as the lack of infrastructure requires peak physical condition and optimal weather.
