Cappadocia

Fairy chimneys & balloon skies 🎈🧚

Cappadocia feels like stepping onto another planet, making it one of the most exciting destinations for children's imaginations. Located in central Turkey, this region is defined by its surreal volcanic landscape of "fairy chimneys," honeycomb hills, and towering boulders. The dry, continental climate means hot days and cool nights in summer, and snowy, magical winters. Staying in a cave hotel in towns like Göreme or Ürgüp is a highlight in itself, offering the novelty of sleeping inside a rock formation with modern comforts.

The most iconic activity is watching the sunrise hot air balloons. Even if you don't fly (children usually need to be over 6 years old), seeing the sky fill with colorful balloons from a hotel terrace is mesmerizing. On the ground, the Göreme Open Air Museum allows families to walk into rock-cut churches with ancient frescoes. For a true adventure, head to the underground cities of Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı. These multi-level subterranean settlements, used to hide from invaders, are a maze of tunnels and rooms that older children love exploring—though it can be tight for adults carrying backpacks.

In the town of Avanos, the Red River provides clay for a pottery tradition dating back to the Hittites. Many workshops allow children to sit at the wheel and try throwing their own pot. Hiking is also very accessible here; the Love Valley and Rose Valley offer trails that aren't too strenuous and wind right through the strange rock formations. For a change of scenery, the Ihlara Valley offers a green, leafy walk alongside a river where families can stop for tea in floating huts.

Practicality-wise, comfortable walking shoes are essential as the terrain is dusty and uneven. The food is hearty, featuring clay-pot kebabs (broken open at the table) and plenty of bread and dips that appeal to picky eaters.
