Overview

Northern Patagonia is arguably the most family-friendly region in Argentina's south. Often called the "Switzerland of the Andes," it combines stunning alpine scenery with a highly developed tourism infrastructure. The gateway city, Bariloche, sits on the shores of the massive Nahuel Huapi Lake and is famous for two things kids love: chocolate and St. Bernard dogs. The architecture is timber and stone, the forests are ancient and fragrant, and the lakes are so clear you can see the bottom. Unlike the rugged, windy south, the climate here is milder and the landscapes are greener, making it inviting for hiking, kayaking, and beach days in summer (Jan-Feb) or skiing in winter (July-Sept).

This region is perfect for a road trip. The distances between towns like Villa La Angostura and San Martin de los Andes are manageable, and the scenery changes around every curve. It's a place of legends—from the "Nahuelito" lake monster (a fun story for kids) to the myths of the Mapuche people. The vibe is active but cozy; after a day of trekking to waterfalls or riding cable cars, families gather in tea houses for hot chocolate and cake. It strikes the perfect balance between wild nature and creature comforts.

Key Attractions

The Ruta de los Siete Lagos (Seven Lakes Road) is the definitive activity. This 108km scenic drive connects Villa La Angostura and San Martin de los Andes, passing seven diverse lakes. There are plenty of safe pull-outs for photos and picnics. Near Villa La Angostura, a boat trip to Los Arrayanes National Park is magical; it protects a forest of rare myrtle trees with cold, cinnamon-colored bark that inspired the setting of Bambi. The wooden boardwalks make it stroller-accessible and easy for toddlers.

In Bariloche, Nahuel Huapi National Park offers endless trails. A favorite is the chairlift up Cerro Campanario (often voted one of the best views in the world), which is effortless and offers a café at the top. For snow sports, Chapelco Ski Resort in San Martin is widely considered the most family-friendly ski center in the country, with excellent schools and sledding areas. In summer, Playa Bonita on the lake offers a rocky beach where brave kids can swim in the chilly glacial water.

Practical Advice

Rent a car to get the most out of the region. If visiting in winter, carry snow chains and know how to use them. In summer, the sun is fierce—the UV index is very high due to the ozone hole proximity and clear air. Book accommodation early for January and July (peak seasons). The famous chocolate shops on Mitre Street in Bariloche give out free samples!

Food & Drink

Typical meal times: Lunch 12:30 pm–2:30 pm. Tea time ("Merienda") is a huge ritual here around 5:00 pm–7:00 pm. Dinner from 8:30 pm.

Typical meal costs: Slightly higher than Buenos Aires. A fondue or trout dinner costs ARS 40,000–70,000 (approx. $40–70 USD / €37–65 EUR). Chocolate is sold by weight and is a premium item.

Dietary requirements: Very accommodating. Trout is a great alternative to red meat. Gluten-free options are common in tourist towns.

Signature dishes:

  • Trucha Patagónica – Lake trout, usually grilled with lemon or almond butter. Fresh and mild.
  • Chocolate en Rama – "Branch" chocolate; flaky, log-shaped chocolates unique to Bariloche.
  • Cordero – Patagonian lamb, roasted on a vertical spit (al asador) until the skin is crispy.
  • Ahudamos – Smoked delicacies, including deer, boar, and cheeses, often served as a platter.
Adventure Level
7/10
Why this score?

The region offers world-class skiing, multi-day hiking through fairy-tale forests, and kayaking on large alpine lakes. While very accessible, the mountainous terrain and remote forest paths provide a genuine sense of wilderness for active families.

Medical Access
6/10
Why this score?

Bariloche serves as a regional medical center with decent private clinics and hospitals capable of treating sports injuries and common tourist needs. However, the quality of care is more localized compared to the major metropolitan centers like Buenos Aires.

Tourist Popularity
7/10
Why this score?

Bariloche is a premier international destination, often called the 'Switzerland of the South,' attracting huge numbers of visitors for skiing and summer lake activities. It has one of the most developed tourism infrastructures in the country with a high density of luxury accommodations.

Family Budget Mid

Prices peak in July (ski season) and January (summer). A cabin rental for a family is often ARS 100,000–180,000 (approx. $100–180 USD / €90–165 EUR). Lift passes for skiing are expensive by local standards but cheap internationally (approx $50-70 USD/day). Supermarket prices are slightly higher than in the north due to transport costs.

Family Travel Notice

Children who are residents or have stayed in the country for a long period may require specific written parental authorization to depart the country. It is important to verify current documentation requirements for minors before travel.
