Kruger & Mpumalanga
The land of the rising sun and the Big Five 🦁🌅

Click a region to explore
Mpumalanga, meaning 'The Place Where the Sun Rises,' is South Africa's premier wildlife destination. This region is dominated by the legendary Kruger National Park, a reserve the size of Israel, where elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, and buffalo roam freely. For families, this is the Lion King coming to life. But Mpumalanga is not just about the bushveld; it also hosts the spectacular Panorama Route, a high-altitude scenic drive that winds along the edge of the escarpment, offering views that stretch to Mozambique. The geography here is breathtaking, dropping from cool, misty mountains to the hot, subtropical Lowveld.
Visiting this region is an adventure. It is about early mornings (waking up before dawn to track predators), smell of wild sage, and the thrill of spotting a giraffe neck sticking out of the trees. The infrastructure is excellent for families; the main camps in Kruger are like small villages with shops, pools, and restaurants, making 'roughing it' very comfortable. Outside the park, towns like Hazyview act as adventure hubs offering river rafting, ziplining, and elephant interactions. While it is a malaria area (requiring precautions), the reward is an authentic, immersive African nature experience that children will remember forever.
Key Attractions
The crown jewel is obviously Kruger National Park. Families can self-drive on paved roads, giving them the flexibility to stop for snacks or bathroom breaks whenever needed. Skukuza and Lower Sabie are family-favorite camps. Away from the animals, the Blyde River Canyon is the third-largest canyon in the world and the largest 'green' canyon. The views from God's Window are dizzying and iconic. Nearby, Bourke's Luck Potholes—giant cylindrical rock sculptures formed by swirling water—are a geological wonder where kids can cross bridges over the thundering water. For a step back in time, the gold-rush town of Pilgrim's Rest is preserved exactly as it was in the 1800s, complete with old saloons and diggers' cottages.
Practical Advice
Best Time to Visit: Winter (May–September) is the best time for game viewing as the grass is low and animals congregate at waterholes. It is also dry and less mosquito-prone. Summers are hot, lush, and filled with newborn animals, but visibility is lower.
Food & Drink
Typical meal times: In safari camps, dinner is early (6:00 pm to 8:00 pm) to accommodate early rising. Outside parks, standard times apply.
Typical meal costs: In-park restaurants (Mugg & Bean, etc.) are standard pricing, approx. R80–150 ($4.50–8 USD / €4–7.50 EUR) per meal. Self-catering (braai) is the most popular and cheapest option.
Dietary requirements: Options in the park restaurants can be limited for strict vegans, but self-catering shops are well-stocked. Hazyview restaurants cater to all diets.
Signature dishes:
- Biltong – Cured, dried meat (usually beef or game) spiced with coriander. It is the ultimate safari road-trip snack.
- Pap and Sheba – Stiff maize meal porridge served with a tomato and onion relish, a staple side dish at any braai.
- Game Meat – Many lodges serve Kudu or Impala steaks, which are lean, organic, and flavorful.
Why this score?
While the main rest camps are fenced and comfortable, the experience of self-driving through a massive wilderness area with free-roaming lions and elephants is a significant adventure. The rugged terrain of the Drakensberg escarpment and the sheer scale of the park provide a sense of wildness that is distinct from urban regions.
Why this score?
Medical facilities within the park are limited to basic first aid and local clinics, with serious cases requiring airlift to Mbombela or Johannesburg. As a malaria-risk area, it requires more medical preparation for families compared to the southern provinces, and rural infrastructure remains underdeveloped for complex emergencies.
Why this score?
The Kruger National Park is a global brand and the centerpiece of South African wildlife tourism, drawing hundreds of thousands of international visitors annually. The Panorama Route, featuring the Blyde River Canyon, complements the safari experience with some of the continent's most photographed natural scenery.
Kruger offers a massive price range. Staying in SANParks government camps is very affordable (R1,600 / $85 USD / €80 EUR for a family bungalow). Private luxury lodges on the park borders can cost R10,000+ ($550+ USD) per night. Self-catering keeps food costs very low.
Family Travel Notice
Strict documentation requirements are in place for minors entering or leaving the country. Parents should carry unabridged birth certificates and, if one parent is not present, notarized consent forms to avoid entry or exit delays.
Getting Here & Around
Getting Here
- Airports – Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP) near Mbombela is beautiful and convenient. Skukuza Airport (SZK) is located inside the park for direct access.
- Driving – It is a 4 to 5-hour drive from Johannesburg on the N4 highway. The drive is scenic as you descend the escarpment.
Getting Around
- Car – A vehicle is mandatory. You cannot explore Kruger National Park without one (unless on a guided tour). High clearance is nice but not necessary for main roads.
- Safari Vehicles – Open-game drive vehicles (booked at camps) offer a higher vantage point and expert tracking, well worth the cost for at least one drive.

Packing List
This is a malaria risk area; rigorous mosquito protection is essential.
Open game viewing vehicles are freezing cold in the early morning wind.
Ideally one pair per person; frustration occurs when sharing during a sighting.
Identifying birds and mammals keeps children engaged during slow drives.
SA uses unique large 3-pin plugs (Type M). Standard universal adapters rarely fit these sockets.
Essential for kids on safari to see animals up close and stay engaged during game drives.
Frequent rolling power cuts ('load shedding') mean you may be without lights for 2-4 hours a day.
Morning and evening game drives are surprisingly freezing, even in summer, due to open vehicles.
Immigration occasionally still requests Unabridged Birth Certificates for minors; best to carry a copy.
The air in the interior (Gauteng/Kruger) is incredibly dry and dusty, often causing nosebleeds in kids.
Activities & Best Times
Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism
Home to the world-renowned Kruger National Park and Blyde River Canyon, offering premier wildlife viewing and iconic landscapes. Peak dry months provide optimal animal visibility and lower malaria risk for families.
Urban tourism, museums, historical sites, architecture
Pilgrim's Rest is a unique heritage site and there are significant cultural museums, but the region lacks the density of globally significant cultural institutions needed for an 'excellent' rating. The cultural offerings are nationally significant but not internationally outstanding when compared to Cape Town, Johannesburg, or global cultural capitals.
Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation
Boasts significant hiking infrastructure and specialized adventure facilities like the Long Tom Toboggan. Peak periods avoid the intense humidity and lightning risks associated with summer mountain activities.
Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education
Conservation-focused centers such as Letaba Elephant Hall and Chimpanzee Eden offer world-class scientific engagement. Accessibility is best during the dry season when remote park areas are easiest to reach.
Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel
The Panorama Route is a celebrated scenic drive featuring dramatic geological formations like Bourke's Luck Potholes. Winter peak ensures clear skies and high visibility at major viewpoints which are frequently obscured by summer mist.
Amusement parks, family entertainment venues
Includes specialized attractions like the Graskop Gorge Lift and established water parks. Peak visitation correlates with South African school holiday periods and warmer months suitable for aquatic recreation.
