Danubian Plain (Central North)
Medieval fortresses and riverside adventures 🏰
The Danubian Plain and Central North Bulgaria form a region rich in medieval history and dramatic karst landscapes. The jewel of the area is Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Houses here are stacked steeply on the hillsides overlooking the Yantra River. Families should head straight for the Tsarevets Fortress, a sprawling complex of walls, towers, and palace ruins. Exploring the site requires walking, but the space allows children to roam freely and climb ancient stairs. In the evenings, the "Sound and Light" show illuminates the hill with lasers and dramatic music, retelling Bulgaria's history in a way that mesmerises audiences of all ages.
Just a short drive away lies the village of Arbanasi, known for its fortress-like houses and decorated churches. The Konstantsalieva House operates as a museum where kids can see how wealthy merchants lived centuries ago, complete with separate winter and summer quarters. For nature adventures, the region offers the Devetashka Cave near Lovech. This massive cavern features seven large holes in the ceiling (eyes) that let in sunlight, creating a prehistoric atmosphere. It is home to a large colony of bats, which fascinates young wildlife enthusiasts.
The Emen Canyon provides a scenic eco-trail with wooden bridges and waterfalls, suitable for families with older children who are comfortable with uneven terrain. Near the city of Pleven, the Panorama Pleven Epopee 1877 is a cylindrical museum depicting the Russo-Turkish War with a 360-degree painting and 3D foregrounds—a visually striking history lesson. Further north, near Ruse, the Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo (UNESCO) invite families to hike up to chapels carved directly into the vertical cliffs, offering stunning views of the river valley below.
Practical travel here is best by car, as attractions are spread out. The terrain is hilly, particularly in Veliko Tarnovo, so a carrier is preferable to a stroller for visiting the fortress. Restaurants often feature hearty clay-pot stews and grilled meats, perfect for refueling after a day of climbing and exploring.
