Plovdiv & Thracian Lowlands
Ancient ruins, artsy streets, and city parks 🎭
Plovdiv & Thracian Lowlands centres on Plovdiv, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. The city is extremely family-friendly, with a large pedestrian zone that allows for safe wandering. The Old Town is an architectural reserve of cobblestone streets and beautifully painted 19th-century houses. The standout attraction is the Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis, which is still used for performances. Kids enjoy climbing the marble steps and testing the acoustics on the stage. Just below the Old Town is the Kapana district, a maze of pedestrian lanes filled with art installations, gelato shops, and relaxed cafes where parents can sit while kids play nearby.
For active play, Plovdiv offers the Rowing Canal (Grebna Baza), a massive park area with flat paths perfect for cycling and rollerblading. You can rent bikes or pedal cars for the whole family. The mesmerizing Singing Fountains in the Tsar Simeon Garden offer a light and music show on summer evenings that attracts crowds of local families. Another favourite is the Children’s Railway on Bunardzhik Hill, a real miniature train that takes kids on a short scenic ride through the woods.
A short drive south of Plovdiv leads to Asen's Fortress (Asenova Krepost). Perched on a high ridge, it features a preserved medieval church and fortification walls. The climb is steep but safe, offering dramatic views of the river valley. Further south is the Bachkovo Monastery, the second largest in Bulgaria, where the courtyard is often full of cats and the walkway to the entrance is lined with stalls selling pottery, honey, and wooden toys.
The region has a warmer climate than the mountains, making it a good destination in spring and autumn. Hisarya, known for its mineral springs and Roman ruins, offers parks with ancient fortification walls that kids can explore freely. The terrain is generally flat and stroller-friendly in the modern parts of the cities, though the cobblestones of Plovdiv's Old Town require a sturdy carrier or adventurous walking.

Activities & Best Times
Urban tourism, museums, historical sites, architecture
Plovdiv’s Old Town and Roman Amphitheatre offer a globally unique blend of antiquity and bohemian life, rivaling historic Mediterranean hubs. Peak months provide ideal temperatures (17-24°C) for exploring ancient ruins, while winter months are too cold and damp for comfortable urban exploration.
Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education
The region is a treasure trove of Thracian tombs and Roman archaeology, offering profound historical insights for curious families. Peak summer months ensure all archaeological sites and interactive exhibits are open, whereas off-season weather limits access to outdoor excavations.
Events, celebrations, seasonal attractions
Home to internationally recognized events like the Opera Open in the ancient Roman theater and vibrant wine harvest festivals. Peak timing aligns with the major summer cultural calendar; the winter months lack the significant outdoor festivities that define the region's appeal.
Spa retreats, wellness centers, peaceful getaways
Sophisticated wine-themed spa retreats and the nearby thermal mineral springs of Hisarya offer world-class relaxation. Peak months avoid the peak summer heat (July-August) while maintaining pleasant air temperatures; winter is less suitable for the integrated outdoor wellness experiences this region offers.
Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel
Scenic drives through the Rose Valley and vineyard-laden lowlands connect boutique wineries with historic landmarks. Peak seasons offer the best visibility and landscape beauty (blooms in May/June, harvest in September); winter road conditions and low visibility make for a less scenic experience.
Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism
Rolling hills and the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains provide excellent terrain for hiking and birdwatching in pristine ecosystems. Peak conditions offer comfortable hiking temperatures and peak biodiversity; winter months are characterized by mud, cold, and limited wildlife visibility.
Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation
Features a world-class regatta rowing canal and high-quality cycling routes through the vineyard countryside. Peak months offer optimal weather for outdoor activity; the winter season is unsuitable due to low temperatures and higher precipitation levels.
