The eastern highlands of the DRC are arguably one of the most beautiful places on the African continent. Virunga National Park, Africa's oldest national park, is a UNESCO World Heritage site that protects a significant population of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. The landscape is dominated by the misty Rwenzori Mountains and the glow of the Nyiragongo volcano, which features the world's largest lava lake.
Under stable conditions, this region offers the unparalleled experience of trekking to see gorilla families in the wild and hiking up active volcanoes. The biodiversity here is staggering, ranging from glacial peaks to tropical forests. However, the current security climate makes these activities impossible for families to access safely. The region remains a place of immense natural wonder that the world hopes to return to when peace is restored.
