Volta Region (waterfalls, mountains)

The Volta Region is Ghana's playground for nature lovers and hikers. Dominated by rolling green hills and the expansive Lake Volta, it offers a cooler climate and scenic beauty that contrasts with the coastal plains. For families, the absolute highlight is the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary. Here, the resident Mona monkeys are considered sacred by the villagers and are incredibly habituated to humans. Visitors can walk into the forest with a guide and bananas; the monkeys will often gently jump onto shoulders or hands to peel a snack, providing a magical wildlife interaction that is generally safe and delightful for children.

The region is also home to the impressive Wli Waterfalls, the highest in West Africa. The path to the lower falls is a flat, shaded 45-minute walk through the forest, crossing small bridges and passing fruit trees, making it accessible for most school-aged children. At the falls, the wind and spray create a natural air-conditioner, and there is a shallow pool where families can paddle or swim while watching thousands of fruit bats roosting on the cliffs above.

For families with older children seeking a challenge, Mount Afadjato offers a steep hike to one of Ghana's highest points, rewarding climbers with panoramic views of the valley and neighboring Togo. Alternatively, the region's namesake, Lake Volta, offers calmer activities. Boat rides on the lake or the Volta River near Akosombo allow you to see fishermen at work and enjoy the tranquil scenery. The Akosombo Dam itself is an engineering marvel that can be viewed from designated spots.

The food in the Volta Region is distinct, with banku (corn and cassava dough) and tilapia fish being the local staple, often served with a spicy pepper sauce (shito). The roads winding through the mountains can be curvy, so parents should be prepared if children are prone to car sickness, but the views of the lush landscape make the journey worthwhile.
