Crete

Labyrinths, lagoons, and legends 🐂🏝️

Crete is a destination unto itself, distinct in culture, food, and landscape. It is the largest Greek island and offers an incredible variety of experiences for families. History becomes an adventure at the Palace of Knossos near Heraklion, where children can wander the red-columned ruins connected to the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. To cool off afterwards, the nearby Cretaquarium is one of Europe's largest, introducing kids to sand tiger sharks and jellyfish.

The island's western side, centered around Chania, is famous for its stunning beaches. Elafonissi is a highlight, known for its crushed-shell pink sand and warm, lagoon-like waters that are shallow enough for toddlers to play safely. For older children with a sense of adventure, a boat trip to the Balos Lagoon offers Caribbean-style turquoise waters, while a hike through the shorter Imbros Gorge provides a taste of Crete's rugged canyons without the grueling length of the famous Samaria Gorge.

Inland, the Lasithi Plateau offers a different pace with its old windmills and the Dikteon Cave, mythologically cited as the birthplace of Zeus. Descending into the cool cave to see the stalactites is a thrilling mini-expedition. The cities of Chania and Rethymno feature Venetian harbours with lighthouses and pedestrianized old towns where families can enjoy evening strolls and gelato.

Cretan hospitality (filoxenia) is legendary; restaurant owners often treat children like family. The food is healthy and fresh, with simple dishes like 'dakos' (rusks with tomato and cheese) being a hit. Because of the island's size, renting a car is highly recommended to reach the best beaches and villages. Roads can be winding and mountainous, so allow extra time for travel between regions.
