Sardinia
Caribbean-style beaches and ancient towers ποΈβ΅
Sardinia is distinct from mainland Italy, offering a rugged, wilder beauty and a beach culture that is second to none in Europe. For families who prioritize swimming and sand, this is the top choice. The coastline varies from the glitzy Costa Smeralda in the northeast to the dune-backed beaches of Chia in the south. The water is famous for its transparency and shallow gradients, allowing toddlers to play safely in the surf. Cala Brandinchi is often called "Little Tahiti" for good reason.
Beyond the beach, the island has a deep history. There are over 7,000 Nuragheβancient stone towers from the Bronze Ageβscattered across the island. The site at Su Nuraxi di Barumini (UNESCO listed) allows you to enter the complex, a maze of stone walls that feels like a fortress playground. Near Alghero on the west coast, you can visit the Neptune's Grotto, a spectacular sea cave accessible by boat or a dramatic 654-step staircase carved into the cliff.
Sardinian culture is deeply connected to the land. Staying at an agriturismo (farm stay) is highly recommended. These often feature fixed-price dinners of incredible quality (roasted meats, homemade pasta like malloreddus) and allow children to interact with farm animals. The Giara di Gesturi plateau is home to the last wild horses in Europe, which can be spotted on easy nature walks.
Travel here almost exclusively requires a rental car. Distances can be long, and public transport is sparse. The island is windy (the Maestrale wind), which keeps the summer heat manageable but can whip up waves on exposed coasts. While Italians flock here in August, visiting in June or September guarantees perfect weather with fewer crowds.

Activities & Best Times
Beach resorts, marine activities: diving, snorkelling, kite surfing, wind surfing, sailing
Sardinia offers world-class turquoise waters and white sands that rival the Maldives, particularly in the Costa Smeralda and La Maddalena. Peak summer months provide the perfect 25-31Β°C air temperatures and calm, clear seas, while winter brings high rainfall and significant seasonal closures.
Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism
Home to the Gennargentu National Park and Gola Su Gorropu, the island provides a rugged, authentic wilderness for high-end trekking. Late spring and early autumn offer optimal hiking weather, whereas the peak summer heat can be too intense for strenuous outdoor exploration.
Urban tourism, museums, historical sites, architecture
Cagliari and Alghero offer sophisticated urban history with medieval architecture and distinct Catalan influences. These cities are best explored in the mild transition seasons; July and August can be overcrowded and hot, while winter months are quite wet.
Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education
The island's unique Nuragic civilization and UNESCO-listed stone towers offer a prehistoric archaeological experience found nowhere else in the world. Spring and autumn provide the best climate for site visits, avoiding the peak summer humidity and winter rainy season.
Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel
Scenic coastal drives like the SS125 Orientale Sarda offer world-class vistas of granite cliffs and the emerald coast. May, June, and September provide clear visibility and pleasant driving conditions, while winter months see the highest precipitation and potential for road mist.
Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation
A global destination for elite sailing and yachting in Porto Cervo, as well as exceptional rock climbing on limestone cliffs. Conditions are ideal when winds are consistent and temperatures are moderate (18-27Β°C) in late spring and early autumn.
Events, celebrations, seasonal attractions
Sardinia's festivals (Mamoiada Carnival, Sant'Efisio with thousands of costumed participants, S'Ardia horse race) are genuinely distinctive ancient traditions found nowhere else in the Mediterranean. While niche and requiring planning, they are not 'marginal' β they attract dedicated cultural travelers and are significant within Mediterranean festival culture. 'Good' acknowledges they exist as a real draw without overstating their mainstream appeal.
Spa retreats, wellness centers, peaceful getaways
The island hosts several ultra-luxury spa retreats and wellness centers focusing on thalassotherapy and Mediterranean tranquility. June and September offer the perfect balance of warm weather and serene atmosphere before or after the peak summer tourist crowds.
