Hokkaido

Hokkaido is Japan's untamed north, a land of expansive horizons, volcanic ranges, and clear caldera lakes. Unlike the dense urban sprawl of mainland Japan, Hokkaido feels open and wild, making it arguably the best region for family road trips. The roads are wide and straight, navigating through patchwork farmland and national parks. The climate is distinct: distinctively snowy, long winters and mild, low-humidity summers that provide a welcome escape from the sweltering heat of Tokyo and Osaka.

In winter, Hokkaido is a world-class destination. The Sapporo Snow Festival features massive ice sculptures that leave children awestruck, often including slides made entirely of ice. For a wildlife encounter, the Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa is famous for its innovative enclosures, such as glass tunnels through the penguin pool and tubes for seals, allowing kids to see animals up close in active environments.

Summer brings a different palette of colors. The hills of Furano and Biei erupt in stripes of lavender, poppies, and sunflowers. Many local farms offer tractor rides, melon tasting, and ice cream making workshops using the region's famous high-quality dairy. Outdoor-loving families can explore the Shiretoko Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where boat cruises offer chances to spot brown bears and whales in the wild. Closer to Sapporo, Otaru offers a charming canal district with glass-blowing workshops and music box museums that captivate older children.

Culturally, visitors can learn about the Ainu, the indigenous people of northern Japan, at the new Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park near scenic Lake Poroto. The facility uses traditional dance, crafts, and open-air village reconstructions to teach history in an engaging way. Food is a major highlight: miso ramen with butter and corn, fresh crab, and soft-serve ice cream are staples that are generally very popular with children.

While the Shinkansen reaches Hakodate in the south, exploring the rest of the island often requires a car or domestic flights. Rental cars are highly recommended for families to manage luggage and schedules freely. Whether catching snowflakes or running through flower fields, Hokkaido focuses on simple, natural pleasures on a grand scale.
