Phnom Penh

Golden palaces and river cruises in the Kingdom's heart 🏯🚤

Phnom Penh is a sensory experience of colors, sounds, and history located at the confluence of three major rivers: the Mekong, the Bassac, and the Tonle Sap. While often viewed as a transit hub, the capital has plenty to offer families who linger. The sheer energy of the streets, filled with tuk-tuks and motorbikes, is an attraction in itself, though crossing roads requires careful supervision. The city is rapidly modernizing, offering a mix of ancient tradition and air-conditioned comfort, which is vital for travelling with little ones in the tropical heat.

A visit to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda is a must. The glittering roofs and manicured gardens provide a fairy-tale setting, and the open spaces allow children to walk around, although respectful dress is required. Just next door, the National Museum houses the world's finest collection of Khmer sculpture; its central courtyard with koi ponds is a peaceful spot to rest. In the late afternoon, the riverside promenade comes alive. Families can join locals for aerobics, feed the pigeons, or board a wooden boat for a sunset cruise to see the city skyline transition from day to night.

For a break from the heat, modern malls like Aeon Mall offer large indoor playgrounds and familiar food options, which can be a welcome reset for tired children. Wat Phnom, the hilltop temple that gives the city its name, is another green space where monkeys often play in the trees—fun to watch, but best to keep a distance. While sites like the Killing Fields are historically significant, they are generally too confronting for young children; families often stick to the cultural and architectural highlights instead.

Dining in Phnom Penh is diverse, ranging from street stalls selling baguettes (num pang) to high-quality international restaurants. The city is also a great place to introduce kids to Khmer cuisine, such as mild fish amok, in a hygienic restaurant setting. With its mix of river breezes, golden temples, and urban energy, Phnom Penh offers a vibrant start or end to a Cambodian family holiday.
