Cedars & Mountains
majestic peaks and ancient forests ๐ฒ๐๏ธ
The Cedars & Mountains region offers a refreshing escape into nature, far removed from the humidity and noise of the coast. The highlight for any visitor is the Cedars of God (Arz ar-Rab), a UNESCO World Heritage site housing some of the last remaining vestiges of the immense forests that once covered Mount Lebanon. For children, walking amongst these ancient trees is a magical experience; some of the cedars are thousands of years old, with massive trunks that require a whole family holding hands to encircle. The flat pathways through the forest are accessible for all ages, making it an easy and rewarding nature walk.
Just below the cedar grove lies the town of Bcharre, the gateway to the spectacular Qadisha Valley (the Holy Valley). This deep gorge is famous for its rock-cut monasteries and dramatic scenery. Families with older children can enjoy hiking along the valley floor, which is lush with wildflowers in the spring and offers shade during the summer. The valley has a history of refuge and spirituality, and the Monastery of Saint Anthony of Qozhaya is a fascinating stop, featuring an old printing press and caves that kids love to explore.
The region is also home to the Gibran Museum, dedicated to the famous writer Kahlil Gibran. Housed in an old monastery built into the rock, the museum is interesting for its architecture and location, even if the literary history is more suited for adults. In winter, this region transforms into a snowy playground, with ski resorts like vast slopes for skiing, sledding, and snowshoeing.
The climate here is significantly cooler than the coast, so families should pack layers even in summer. The fresh mountain air and stunning vistas provide a peaceful backdrop for a family trip. Whether you are building snowmen in January or picnicking under the shade of a millennial cedar in August, the mountains offer a serene and majestic environment that highlights Lebanon's natural beauty.

Activities & Best Times
Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism
Home to the UNESCO-listed Cedars of God and the dramatic Qadisha Valley, offering world-class hiking and pristine alpine scenery. Peak months provide dry, clear weather (precip <70mm) ideal for exploring ancient forests, while winter months see heavy precipitation and snow-blocked trails.
Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel
Spectacular mountain passes and winding roads offer some of the most scenic drives in the Middle East. Peak months ensure dry roads and high visibility; winter months are dangerous for road travel due to heavy snow, ice, and frequent rain (up to 176mm in Jan).
Urban tourism, museums, historical sites, architecture
This is primarily a nature/mountain region. The Gibran Museum and monasteries are interesting but niche cultural offerings. 'Very_good' city_cultural implies significant urban/cultural infrastructure which this mountain region lacks. 'Good' reflects cultural interest as a secondary activity.
Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education
A living museum of biblical history and ecological conservation, perfect for families seeking intellectual depth. Ideal weather (15-28ยฐC) allows for guided tours of UNESCO sites, whereas extreme winter conditions limit educational outdoor programming.
Events, celebrations, seasonal attractions
The Cedars International Festival draws global performers to a unique setting under the ancient trees during mid-summer. These peak months offer perfect evening temperatures (approx 22-27ยฐC) for outdoor concerts, while the rest of the year lacks major internationally-significant events.
Spa retreats, wellness centers, peaceful getaways
High-altitude boutique retreats offer a peaceful escape from the humid coast with stunning mountain vistas. Summer months provide a refreshing, low-humidity (53-56%) climate for wellness; winter can feel isolated with harsh weather limiting outdoor relaxation.
Winter sports, ski resorts, snow activities
Lebanon's ski resorts (Cedars, Mzaar Kfardebian) are unique for the Middle East but objectively small and limited compared to Alpine, Rocky Mountain, Japanese, or Scandinavian resorts. Snow reliability is variable. 'Good' reflects the availability of skiing without overstating its international standing. No ski attraction evidence in DB.
Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation
A hub for mountain biking, paragliding, and trail running in a rugged, authentic landscape. Best experienced when rainfall is minimal (May-Sept), as heavy winter rains (over 100mm monthly) make the terrain unsuitable for most non-snow active sports.
