Tripoli

Authentic souks, medieval castles, and sweet treats 🍬🏰

⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: Due to sporadic sectarian violence and instability, government agencies (including the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia) advise travelers to reconsider travel to Tripoli. Certain neighbourhoods have been flashpoints for conflict. Families are strongly urged to consult their own government's official travel advisory before considering a trip, as circumstances and risk assessments vary.

Tripoli (Trablous) is Lebanon's second-largest city and offers an experience that feels deeply rooted in history and tradition. Unlike the modernized districts of Beirut, Tripoli's Old City retains the character of the Mamluk era, with a labyrinth of narrow alleys, mosques, and hammams. The most exciting attraction for children is undoubtedly the Citadel of Raymond de Saint-Gilles. This massive hilltop fortress dominates the skyline and offers endless opportunities for exploration. Kids can scramble up stone staircases, peek through arrow slits, and run across vast courtyards while imagining the knights and soldiers of the past.

Below the castle lie the vibrant souks (markets). A visit to the Soap Khan (Khan al-Saboun) is a must; families can see how traditional olive oil soap has been made by hand for centuries. The soap comes in various shapes and colours, making for fun and practical souvenirs. The souks are also a sensory adventure, filled with the scents of spices and fresh bread. However, the streets can be crowded and chaotic, so keeping a close eye on children is essential.

For a change of pace, the Mina district offers a more relaxed seaside atmosphere. The Corniche here is wide and clean, popular for walking and biking. You can take a boat trip to the Palm Islands Nature Reserve (seasonal), which protects local wildlife and offers cleaner waters for swimming. Finally, no trip to Tripoli is complete without tasting its legendary sweets. The city is famous for its baklava and knefeh, and a stop at Hallab 1881—a palace of pastries—is a treat that children will talk about long after the trip ends.

Activities & Best Times

City & Cultural Very Good

Urban tourism, museums, historical sites, architecture

Tripoli is an exceptionally authentic destination featuring one of the world's best-preserved collections of Mamluk architecture and ancient souks. Peak months provide optimal temperatures and low rainfall for exploring the historic Citadel and mosques, while significant winter precipitation (over 150mm/month) makes outdoor urban exploration difficult.

Road Trips & Scenic Good

Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel

As a gateway to Northern Lebanon, Tripoli is a perfect base for scenic drives to the Cedars of God and the Qadisha Valley. Late spring and early autumn offer the best visibility and pleasant driving conditions, whereas the intense winter rainfall can lead to poor road conditions and restricted mountain access.
