Antananarivo & Highlands

Royal history and cool highland breezes 👑⛰️

⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: Due to elevated crime rates in urban centers, government agencies (including the US, UK, and Canada) advise travelers to exercise increased caution in this region. Petty crime and opportunistic theft are concerns in Antananarivo, particularly in crowded markets and after dark. Families are strongly urged to consult their own government's official travel advisory before considering a trip, as circumstances and risk assessments vary.

Antananarivo, affectionately known as 'Tana', serves as the bustling gateway to Madagascar. While the city's traffic and steep streets can be intense, it offers a fascinating introduction to Malagasy culture. Families often enjoy a visit to the Lemurs' Park located just outside the city. This private reserve allows children to see various free-ranging lemur species without the need for strenuous jungle trekking, making it a perfect first stop for younger travelers. For a dive into history, the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga provides a peaceful setting to learn about the Merina monarchy, with well-preserved palaces and sweeping views of the countryside.

Heading south into the Highlands, the landscape shifts to terraced rice paddies and rolling hills. The town of Antsirabe is a favorite for families, known for its thermal springs and wide, tree-lined avenues. It is the 'pousse-pousse' (rickshaw) capital of the country, and children are often delighted by the brightly painted carts. Local workshops here are highly engaging; artisans demonstrate how to create miniature bicycles and cars from recycled cans, or craft jewellery from zebu horn. These interactive visits offer unique souvenirs and a chance for kids to see creative recycling in action.

The climate in the Highlands is significantly cooler than the coast, especially in the evenings, so packing layers is essential. The region acts as the cultural heart of the island, where you can taste traditional dishes like Romazava (meat and greens stew) in a comfortable, temperate environment. While the roads wind through the mountains, the journey offers a window into rural village life that is distinct from the tourist resorts.
