Oslo & Eastern Norway

Urban discovery meets forest fun 🏙️🌲

Oslo & Eastern Norway serves as the country's cultural heart and usually the entry point for international travellers. Oslo itself has transformed into one of Europe's most family-friendly capitals. The city centre is compact and safe, with the harbour promenade connecting many attractions. A highlight is the Oslo Opera House, where families are actively encouraged to walk on the sloping white marble roof for views over the fjord.

The Bygdøy peninsula is a treasure trove for curious kids, accessible by a short ferry ride in summer. Here, the Fram Museum houses the massive wooden polar exploration ship Fram, which children can board to explore the cabins and cargo hold, experiencing a simulated polar storm. Next door, the Kon-Tiki Museum displays Thor Heyerdahl's balsa wood raft. Back in the city, the Vigeland Park features over 200 bronze and granite sculptures in a vast open space where children can run freely, climb on designated statues, and mimic the angry "Sinnataggen" (The Angry Boy) statue.

Just outside the city lies Tusenfryd, Norway's largest amusement park, featuring roller coasters and water rides suitable for various ages. Heading north by train, you reach Lillehammer, host of the 1994 Winter Olympics. Families can visit the ski jump tower or explore Maihaugen, an immense open-air museum with historic buildings, farm animals, and actors in costume. The nearby Hunderfossen Fairy Tale Park is specifically designed for families, featuring giant trolls and attractions based on Norwegian folklore.

The region's geography is gentler than the west, with rolling hills, deep forests, and lakes like Mjøsa. This makes it ideal for lower-impact activities like canoeing or cycling on flat terrain. The climate is generally drier and warmer in summer than the west coast, making it a reliable option for outdoor play.
