Northern Luzon (Banaue, Sagada)

mountains, mists, and ancient traditions ⛰️🌾

Northern Luzon offers a dramatic departure from the typical tropical beach holiday. This is a region of pine forests, mist-covered mountains, and indigenous culture, ideal for active families with older children or teenagers. The journey itself is an adventure, involving winding roads that climb thousands of feet above sea level. The climate here is cool and crisp, often requiring light jackets in the evenings—a refreshing change from the coastal heat.

The crown jewel is the Banaue Rice Terraces. Carved into the mountains over 2,000 years ago by the Ifugao people, these emerald steps are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Families can hire local guides to walk along the terrace walls. For a more immersive experience, the village of Batad is located within a natural amphitheater of terraces; it requires a hike to reach but offers unforgettable scenery. It’s important to wear sturdy shoes and carry water, as the paths can be steep and uneven.

Further north, the town of Sagada offers a different kind of thrill. It is famous for its hanging coffins, an ancient burial tradition where coffins are suspended from limestone cliffs. While spooky, it fascinates many older kids and serves as a unique cultural touchpoint. Sagada is also known for spelunking; Sumaguing Cave offers guided tours where you wade through underground pools and scramble over rock formations. This is physically demanding and best suited for fit families with teens. Afterward, you can enjoy the local mountain coffee and lemon pie, staples of the region.

Travel here requires preparation. Bus rides from Manila can take 9-10 hours, often overnight, though private vans offer more flexibility. The infrastructure is rustic—expect simple guesthouses rather than luxury hotels. However, the opportunity to disconnect from digital life and reconnect with nature and heritage makes the long journey worthwhile. The region teaches resilience and appreciation for indigenous engineering and history.
