Western Region (Jeddah, Mecca & Medina)
Coastal fun and deep traditions by the Red Sea 🌊
The Western Region of Saudi Arabia, traditionally known as the Hejaz, is defined by its relationship with the Red Sea and the Sarawat Mountains. For most international touring families, Jeddah serves as the primary base. Known as the "Bride of the Red Sea," Jeddah has a more relaxed, open atmosphere compared to the interior. The city's waterfront, the Jeddah Corniche, stretches for 30 kilometres and is lined with parks, fountains, and playgrounds. Families often rent bicycles here or visit the Fakieh Aquarium to see sharks and dolphins native to the local waters.
History comes alive in Al Balad, Jeddah's UNESCO-listed old town. The tall houses made of coral stone and teak wood have distinctive latticed windows (roshan) that fascinate visitors. The area is a sensory maze of spices, fabrics, and uneven alleyways—better suited for walking carriers than strollers. For water lovers, the Red Sea offers some of the world's best snorkeling. Boat trips can be arranged for families to swim in calm, warm waters teeming with colourful fish, and glass-bottom boats are available for those who prefer to stay dry.
While the region houses Mecca and Medina, it is important to note that the holy sites in these cities are accessible only to Muslim visitors. Muslim families often combine Umrah with tourism in Jeddah. For non-Muslim families, the mountain city of Taif offers a great alternative day trip. Located high in the mountains, it is famous for its cooler weather, rose farms, and resident baboons (which are fun to watch from a car but can be aggressive with food). The cable car ride in Taif provides spectacular views of the escarpment dropping down toward the coast.
Practical considerations: The coastal humidity in Jeddah is high year-round, though sea breezes help in the evenings. The region is well-connected by the Haramain High Speed Railway, which links Jeddah, Mecca, and Medina, offering a fast and comfortable travel option for those eligible to visit the holy cities. For general tourism, winter evenings on the Corniche are the peak social time for local families.

Activities & Best Times
Beach resorts, marine activities: diving, snorkelling, kite surfing, wind surfing, sailing
Home to world-class Red Sea coral reefs with exceptional biodiversity and visibility for diving. Peak months offer the ideal 25-32°C air temperature range; summer months (Jun-Sep) are omitted due to extreme heat indices exceeding 40°C which limit outdoor comfort for families.
Urban tourism, museums, historical sites, architecture
Jeddah's Al-Balad is a UNESCO World Heritage site offering authentic coral-stone architecture and a deep maritime history. The winter months provide the necessary mild climate (15-28°C) for exploring ancient alleys, while the extreme summer heat makes urban walking tours unsuitable.
Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism
Offers a unique blend of world-class marine exploration and rugged Hejaz mountain landscapes. Peak winter months are optimal for desert excursions and hiking; the off-season sees temperatures too high for safe or enjoyable outdoor physical exertion.
Learning experiences, scientific sites, historical education
Rich in historical and scientific educational value, from Islamic history in Medina to the cutting-edge marine research at KAUST. Seasonal timing is dictated by the ability to move comfortably between outdoor archaeological sites and indoor facilities during the cooler winter period.
Events, celebrations, seasonal attractions
Jeddah Season and various cultural art fairs transform the city into a vibrant hub of international entertainment. These events are strategically scheduled for the winter months to leverage the mild coastal weather, with very little outdoor festival activity during the scorching summer.
Spa retreats, wellness centers, peaceful getaways
Sophisticated luxury resorts along the 'Corniche' and newer Red Sea developments provide high-end spa and wellness facilities. Peak months offer pleasant humidity and temperatures for outdoor meditation and yoga, whereas summer humidity and heat levels are restrictive.
Sport tourism, fitness activities, active recreation
Exceptional for sailing, windsurfing, and golf with facilities that meet international standards. Ideal conditions align with the spring and autumn windows for optimal wind and manageable heat; summer is too intense for high-intensity activity.
Scenic drives, countryside tours, route-based travel
Modern highways offer high-speed connectivity between the coast and the Hejaz mountains, suitable for scenic coastal drives. The rating is conservative due to a lack of diverse rural landscapes compared to global benchmarks, and travel is best limited to the coolest months.
Amusement parks, family entertainment venues
The region features modern indoor amusement parks and the prominent Fakieh Aquarium, offering quality family entertainment. While these facilities meet high standards, they lack the global scale of top-tier international theme parks, and the outdoor areas of the Corniche are only enjoyable in the winter.
