Ljubljana

Europe's greenest capital for little explorers 🐉

Ljubljana is frequently cited as one of the most family-friendly capitals in Europe. Small, green, and incredibly safe, the city center is closed to motorized traffic, transforming the Old Town into a massive pedestrian zone where children can roam freely. The pace of life here is relaxed, with a café culture that welcomes families. The climate is continental, meaning warm summers and cold, potentially snowy winters, but the city remains lively year-round.

The city's mascot, the dragon, is everywhere—most notably guarding the Dragon Bridge. Spotting dragons on bridges, manhole covers, and souvenirs becomes a fun game for kids. High above the town sits Ljubljana Castle, accessible by a funicular railway that is an attraction in itself. Inside the castle, families can explore the Museum of Puppetry, climb the viewing tower, or join a "Time Machine" tour where costumed actors enact the castle's history. Back in the city center, the House of Illusions provides brain-teasing fun perfect for rainy days, while the House of Experiments offers hands-on science activities.

Nature is never far away in Ljubljana. Tivoli Park, the city's largest green space, stretches right into the center. It features wide promenades, a pond, and a large adventure playground affectionately known as the "Fish Playground." For a unique perspective, families can take a wooden boat cruise along the Ljubljanica River, passing under the famous Triple Bridge and waving to pedestrians on the banks. The Ljubljana Zoo is located on the southern slope of the Rožnik hill and is manageable in size, featuring varied terrain and a petting zoo.

Food options are plentiful and varied. The Odprta kuhna (Open Kitchen) food market, held on Fridays in the warmer months, is a fantastic family dining experience where you can try dishes from dozens of different chefs in an informal, outdoor setting. With its central location, Ljubljana is also the perfect base camp; almost any other part of Slovenia can be reached within a 90-minute drive.
