For families with older teenagers willing to travel further, the Gola Rainforest National Park in the east offers deep jungle trekking and the chance to spot rare birds and pygmy hippos, though the journey is long and rugged.

The coastline along the Freetown Peninsula features stunning, uncrowded beaches. Travel in Sierra Leone requires planning. The best time to visit is during the dry season (November to April). Families must consult a travel doctor regarding malaria prophylaxis and Yellow Fever vaccinations well in advance. Road conditions can be poor outside major routes, so hiring a private 4WD vehicle with an experienced local driver is the safest and most comfortable way to get around. While English is the official language, Krio is widely spoken; learning a few phrases like "kushe" (hello) will be met with warm smiles from the friendly locals.
