Freetown is a city of contrasts, nestled between lush mountains and the ocean. The absolute highlight for families is the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, located just 40 minutes from the city center in the rainforest reserve. This sanctuary rescues orphaned chimpanzees and offers educational tours that are a hit with children (minimum age often applies for tours, but the setting is magical). You can even stay overnight in their eco-lodges to hear the sounds of the jungle at dawn.
For a dose of history and culture, the Sierra Leone National Museum provides an accessible introduction to the country's tribes and traditions without being overwhelming. Nearby, the site of the historic Cotton Tree (which fell in 2023) remains a symbolic landmark of freedom. Families with older children (teens) might consider the boat trip to Bunce Island. This former slave fortress is a deeply moving educational site; while the history is heavy, it provides an essential lesson on the Atlantic trade that connects directly to American history.
If you need to burn off energy, a drive up to Leicester Peak offers panoramic views of the city and harbour. For dining, the city offers everything from street snacks to international cuisine. Lumley Beach is the city's social hub with a long promenade, though it is better suited for sunset dinners at beachside restaurants than for swimming, due to cleanliness issues compared to the peninsula beaches further south.
