Western Tanzania (Mahale, Gombe - chimps)

Chimpanzee encounters on the great lake 🐡🚀

⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: Due to the proximity to the borders with Burundi and the DRC, where armed groups operate, government agencies (including the US, UK, and Canada) advise travelers to reconsider travel to this region. Access is typically via secure charter flights or boats organized by lodges. Families are strongly urged to consult their own government's official travel advisory before considering a trip, as circumstances and risk assessments vary.

Western Tanzania is a remote frontier known for its primate experiences and deep lakes. Gombe Stream National Park is the smallest park in Tanzania and famous as the site of Jane Goodall's pioneering research. It is accessible by boat from Kigoma and offers a focused chimp-viewing experience. Families should note that strict age limits apply for chimpanzee trekking (often 15 years and older) to protect the primates from human diseases and ensure safety.

Further south, Mahale Mountains National Park combines dramatic forest-clad peaks with the sandy beaches of Lake Tanganyika. The lake is the longest and second-deepest freshwater lake in the world, with water so clear it rivals the Caribbean. Visitors can swim with colorful cichlid fish or take kayak trips along the shoreline. The remoteness of Mahale means it is almost exclusively accessed by light aircraft followed by a boat transfer, making the journey itself an adventure.

This region is best for families with teenagers who can handle the humidity and the physical exertion of hiking through forests. The encounters with habituated chimpanzees are profound, often allowing visitors to observe grooming, playing, and social interactions at close range. Between treks, the lodges offer a relaxed, barefoot luxury atmosphere that feels worlds away from the standard safari circuit.

Activities & Best Times

Adventure & Nature Excellent

Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism

A world-class frontier for primate encounters, Mahale and Gombe offer arguably the most authentic wild chimpanzee trekking on Earth within a pristine rainforest-meets-lake ecosystem. The dry season (Jun-Sep) is peak as chimps congregate on lower mountain slopes and trails remain navigable, whereas heavy tropical rains (Nov-Apr) make the steep terrain dangerously slick.
