Southern Parks (Selous/Nyerere, Ruaha)

Wild rivers and vast landscapes 🛶🐊

⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: Due to regional instability near the Mozambique border and limited infrastructure, government agencies (including the US, UK, and Canada) advise travelers to reconsider travel to southern Tanzania, particularly near the Mtwara region. Organized fly-in safaris to national parks remain the standard for safety. Families are strongly urged to consult their own government's official travel advisory before considering a trip, as circumstances and risk assessments vary.

The Southern Parks offer a sense of scale and solitude that differs from the busy northern circuit. Nyerere National Park (formerly the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve) is dominated by the majestic Rufiji River. This water source allows for boat safaris, a highlight for families as it breaks the routine of vehicle-based game drives. Drifting past pods of grunting hippos, sunbathing crocodiles, and elephants drinking at the bank provides a unique perspective on wildlife that feels adventurous yet safe.

Ruaha National Park is hotter and drier, known for its rugged terrain and significant predator populations, including large lion prides and wild dogs. The park feels remote and exclusive, with fewer vehicles at sightings. Because the travel distances between these parks are vast and roads can be rough, the best way for families to visit is by light aircraft. These flights not only save time but offer incredible aerial views of the landscape.

Accommodation in the south tends to be in smaller, intimate camps. Many offer family tents and flexible dining schedules. Walking safaris are permitted here for older children (usually over 16), but the boat and vehicle trips provide plenty of excitement for younger ones. The best time to visit is during the dry season (June to October) when animals congregate around the remaining water sources.

Adventure & Nature Excellent

Hiking, wildlife, outdoor exploration, ecotourism

A world-class wilderness offering unique boat safaris on the Rufiji River and elite walking treks to track rare wild dogs away from safari crowds.
