Punta del Este & East Coast

Sun, sand, and sea lions on the Atlantic 🏖️🦀

Punta del Este and the extended East Coast offer Uruguay's premier beach experiences, ranging from glamorous resorts to wild, protected dunes. In Punta del Este itself, the peninsula divides the sea into two distinct zones: the Mansa (calm side) and the Brava (rough side). Families with small children generally prefer the Mansa beaches, where the water is flat and safe for swimming. A compulsory stop is The Hand (La Mano), a giant sculpture of fingers rising from the sand on Brava beach—a perfect spot for a fun family photo.

A short drive away lies Casapueblo, a sprawling white building created by artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. It resembles a Mediterranean citadel and has no straight lines, which fascinates children. Visit in the late afternoon to experience the famous sunset ceremony. For wildlife enthusiasts, a boat trip to Isla de Lobos reveals one of the largest sea lion colonies in the Western Hemisphere. Seeing these noisy, playful animals up close is often the highlight of the trip for kids.

Crossing the undulating bridge into La Barra, the vibe becomes more relaxed. Teenagers often enjoy the surf culture here, while younger kids can explore the calmer inlets. Further east into the department of Rocha, the landscape changes to rugged nature. Towns like La Paloma offer a quieter, more rustic pace. The lighthouse at La Paloma is open to visitors and offers great views of the Atlantic.

For adventurous families, a day trip to Cabo Polonio is unforgettable. Accessible only by heavy-duty 4x4 trucks that cross the shifting sand dunes, this protected hamlet has no electricity grid and hosts a massive colony of sea lions right by the lighthouse. The journey on the truck is an adventure in itself. Whether you choose the upscale amenities of Punta del Este or the raw nature of Rocha, this coastline provides endless opportunities for sandcastles, surfing lessons, and fresh seafood by the ocean.
